From 3 to 3 ride Muni Free

The SFMTA is proud to offer free Muni service on all lines from 3:00 am Tuesday, April 18 through 3:00 am Wednesday, April 19, 2006. Hopefully, this will give regular riders, and those who don’t take advantage of our great system the incentive to ride Muni to participate in the many events celebrating the City of San Francisco’s Centennial of the Great Quake and Fire, and the success and determination that rebuilt this city.

The employees of the MTA have a long history of providing transportation and street management services during good times and bad. The Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906 isn’t the only major event that we have experienced in San Francisco, but even back then, the cable cars continued to run.

As many of you will remember and were directly involved, on Tuesday, October 17, 1989, at 5:04 p.m., the Loma Prieta earthquake hit the Bay Area. Muni was quick to respond, helping to evacuate thousands of fans from Candlestick Park who had gone to witness the 3rd game of the Bay Bridge World Series. With all electrical power out in the city, DPT responded immediately to manage the outpouring of pedestrians and vehicles onto our streets and sidewalks and prevented total gridlock. Muni quickly put all the vehicles in its diesel fleet to work. Within 15 hours, Muni had restored 65% of its scheduled service; and less than 48 hours after had 100% of our service restored. DPT employees were busy for those same 48 hours (and beyond) keeping traffic moving at critical intersections.

The MTA has always had a tradition of going the extra mile, whether it is simply due to construction that blocks the streets or in times of crisis. More recently on 9/11 when we provided buses for the airport, and during other emergencies, all of the employees of the MTA work together to keep the streets safe and clear and are always at the disposal of the Red Cross and other transportation and aid agencies if needed.

Each and every one of us plays a part in the successes that we achieve. Whether it is ensuring that our passengers ride clean comfortable vehicles, are treated courteously, or can cross the street safely – it takes your initiative and teamwork to get the job done well. I am proud of the leadership role taken and contributions that MTA employees have made in working with the planning team for the Centennial Celebration. I know that you will all be very busy on Tuesday, and will continue in the grand tradition of providing exceptional service as the eyes of the world are focused on San Francisco.

Nathaniel P. Ford, Sr., Executive Director/CEO
