Let me start by saying thank you to all who daily make a commitment to making MTA one of the finest transit agencies in the nation and the world. We should all be proud of the work we do here, and I am proud to be part of this dynamic organization.

It’s important at the MTA that in the course of doing our jobs, we make a distinction between leadership and management. Management is a necessary component to any organization of this size, but it is the leaders who make the organization work. And every one of us can and should provide leadership in our roles. The way we go about our daily tasks, the way we commit to making public safety and customer service important to our jobs – shows leadership to our peers, our citizens and our customers.

One of the most important issues facing the MTA today is safety. It is on this issue that the leadership of all of us is critical. We must be able to demonstrate to our customers, the people who put their faith and trust in us every day, that no issue is more important to us than ensuring that our streets and services are safe. Focusing on safety, and providing leadership with our team members on safety, should be a key part of our daily work, whether we work on pedestrian, bike, vehicle, or transit services.

Improving safety is an on-going commitment. But that doesn’t stop us from doing all that we can right now to put the focus where it needs to be, and that is keeping the streets moving safely and providing a clean, reliable, safe system for our customers.

Thanks again for all that you do. Thanks for your leadership on this important issue. Thanks for letting the people of San Francisco know how much you care.

SF MTA Executive Director, Nathaniel P. Ford, Sr.
