Dear Fellow Employee:

As I wrap up my first year at the SFMTA, I want to take a moment to look back on the accomplishments of this past year and to look forward to the goals ahead. Our agency has achieved a great deal due to your fine work. We have an exciting year ahead of us and some important tasks at hand, specifically the opening of the Third Street Light Rail, or T-Third. I am proud of the cooperation and collaboration that has guided our work on the T-Third.

Over the past year, we have achieved multiple goals. We reorganized our divisions and leadership team; began the Transit Effectiveness Project and broader strategic planning; restructured the budget; executed the LRV and 1-CA service quality pilot programs; unveiled SFgo; and completed the construction phase of the T-Third project.

The T-Third represents a significant achievement for the agency and San Francisco. With eighteen new stations and over five miles of new track, the T-Third means a $650 million investment in the future of our city. It also showcases the most comprehensive planning approach ever undertaken by our agency. Opening the T-Third will unveil a model transportation corridor that includes enhanced bus service, better traffic management and Metro service, easier regional connections, and the latest in traffic technology.

From Operations to the Paint Shop to Human Resources to Construction Engineering, you have all pulled together to make the opening of the T-Third possible. As you may know, on Saturday, January 13, we will begin introductory weekend-only service free to customers who board at any of the eighteen new surface platforms along the corridor. Then, on Saturday, April 7, we will kick-off full regular service.

To the MTA, this project represents the culmination of years of work. To the communities the T-Third will serve, it represents increased economic vitality, healthier air quality, and easier mobility. We hope that in a very real sense, the T-Third will become part of the community and improve quality of life.

While the development of the T-Third should make you very proud, we still have work to do. Mastering the challenging tasks ahead will require that we continue to work together in the same spirit of excellence that I have witnessed over this last year. Our creativity, collaboration, and ability to reach across divisions and titles will be the keys to our success.

I look forward to seeing all of you on the T-Third and working with you on this historic effort.

Sincerely,
Nathaniel P. Ford, Sr.
Executive Director/CEO
