As the premier public transit agency in the Bay Area, one of our goals is to encourage people to leave their vehicles at home and allow us to take them safely to their destinations in our city. With an MTA stop within 2 blocks of almost every residence in San Francisco, we have made access to our system extremely convenient. As a reminder of how convenient and reliable our system is, we gave San Franciscans the opportunity to “Ride Muni Free From 3 to 3”. It is both a gesture of our commitment to “transit first” and to commemorate the Centennial of the Great Quake and Fire. This contribution to the celebration kept with our tradition of providing much needed service to the public on a daily basis and when it is most needed.

Thanks to each of you for helping make the MTA’s participation in the “San Francisco Rising” Earthquake and Fire commemoration successful. With all the world watching San Francisco, you once again demonstrated this organization’s commitment to provide exceptional service.

The employees of the MTA have a solid track record of providing transportation and street management services during good times and bad. We now celebrate our successes and contributions that have helped reshape this city. It is my desire that the MTA take the necessary next steps to build on our past achievements, and plan for our future.

As most of you know by now, I announced several changes to the MTA's organizational structure in a memorandum to all MTA employees on April 21st. The basic reasons for these changes are as follows:

  • Improving the effectiveness and efficiency of executive leadership by streamlining decision-making processes and encouraging cross-divisional problem-solving.
  • Creating a more team oriented approach to customer service by consolidating closely related interdepartmental functions under the same divisions.
  • Improving management accountability by establishing clear roles and responsibilities.

You will hear more about the organizational changes in the coming weeks. These are changes that we should all look forward to, because they will help us do an even better job of providing MTA's services to the public.

SF MTA Executive Director, Nathaniel P. Ford, Sr.
