WE'RE IN THIS TOGETHER: Ownership, Involvement, and Responsibility

MTA and City employees are often referred to as civil servants, and we are. Each day, we serve the transit riders, motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, visitors, and residents who depend on our efforts.

I encourage you to own your piece of this vital contribution to the City. Each of us should look for the tools and assistance we need to deliver transportation services to the people of San Francisco. Some of us serve by putting a moving national landmark--our world famous Cable Cars--on the streets each day. Some of us serve by implementing the first MTA model corridor - the new T-Third (a truly collaborative effort that demonstrates the success of combining the expertise of DPT with Muni). Many of us work diligently, behind the scenes to seamlessly keep the City of San Francisco moving. Regardless of your role--whether it is in payroll, planning, citations, operations, maintenance, enforcement, security, support staff, construction, or anywhere else in the organization, you have an opportunity to serve by owning your role.

The MTA is a service organization where each task we do should be done with the customer in mind. We must conduct our work in a way that meets the needs of our customers, yet strikes the right balance between our mission and the economic bottom line. We must strive for higher performance standards, and we must increase our focus on quality, accountability, and responsibility -- not only for our customers, but also for ourselves.

I have stated before that I am impressed with the level of dedication and commitment I have observed in employees throughout our Agency. There is no question that the MTA has accomplished many great things over the past few years in the face of significant challenges; including ongoing budget deficits, merging of two agencies, and leadership changes.

I envision an organization of excellence where no one settles for the ”good enough”. We can build on our past achievements to create an organization where thinking outside the box is the norm. Together we can create an MTA that is solution and customer focused, where each one of us sees our role as a problem solver, a strategic thinker, and an agent of change to continue to grow this organization to greatness.

In order for us to be successful, we must all accept the challenge to act with an entrepreneurial spirit and to that focuses on excellent customer service. This can be achieved by starting every project with the customer in mind; trying new ideas, seeking out new opportunities, thinking and operating strategically, and working collaboratively to get the job done.

I will continue to do my best to make sure you have what you need in order to succeed and look forward to our collaboration.
