Who is Eligible

Veterans Preference is limited to applicants with veteran status who are not current permanent civil service employees of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) or another department of the City and County of San Francisco. Applicants must attain a passing score on an entrance selection process to be entitled to the Veterans Entitlement credit.

Veterans Entitlement Credit

Veterans who meet the eligibility requirements will receive 35 points (5% of the lowest passing score) to be added to their qualifying score. Disabled veterans with a permanent service-connected disability that is of record in the United States Veteran's Administration who meet the eligibility requirements will receive 70 points (10% of the lowest passing score) to be added to their qualifying score.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must have served on active (non-reserve) duty and been released from active duty under conditions other than dishonorable; AND
  • Must have served at least 30 days of active duty in time of war or peace in a campaign or expedition for service in which a medal has been authorized by the government of the United States; OR during the period from September 16, 1940, to January 31, 1955; OR after January 31, 1955, at least 181 consecutive days of active duty.

Required Verification

An applicant must notify the SFMTA of his/her veteran status when he/she submits the initial job application. Applicants must complete the Application for Veterans Preference form and must verify eligibility.

A legible copy of your discharge document (DD214), or other official discharge documents, showing the enlisted and discharge dates, social security number, medals received and the charter of service (i.e. Type of Discharge) must be submitted with the application.

Additional Information

Disabled veterans as defined above shall be afforded all rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act, including any reasonable accommodation if appropriate.

Widows/widowers or surviving domestic partners of deceased eligible veterans may also qualify for Veterans Entitlement credit. See the Application for Veterans Preference form for further details.

Once an applicant has been appointed and has passed the probationary period, Veterans Entitlement points are to be removed from all other eligible lists on which there is standing.

The application is available in two formats, Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) and Microsoft Word, from the City and County of San Francisco Web Site. All application materials for SFMTA positions should be submitted to the location specified on the announcement.
