Release date: Dec. 21, 2011 *** Press Release ***The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) reminds customers that Municipal Railway (Muni) service will be complimentary on New Year’s Eve from 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 31 to 6 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 1 for the 12th consecutive year. At midnight, there will be a fireworks show sponsored by the city from a barge off of The Embarcadero, south of the Ferry Building. Motorists should anticipate delays in the area from approximately 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. As an extra incentive for revelers to travel on transit, there will also be special Muni Metro service extended until approximately 2:15 a.m. between West Portal Station and 4th and King streets and until 4 a.m. between West Portal and Embarcadero stations. Extra service will be deployed on Muni Owl bus routes (1 a.m. – 5 a.m.). No closures or re-routes are planned. SFPD and SFMTA will monitor for any necessary re-routes. Caltrain will depart its final New Year’s train from the 4th and King streets Station at 2:15 a.m., Jan. 1. All Caltrain and Samtrans service will be free after 11p.m., Saturday. For more details, please visit caltrain.com. BART will provide additional service until approximately 3 a.m., Jan. 1. After 8 p.m. BART service to and from the East Bay will be separated between Embarcadero and Montgomery stations. Pittsburg/Bay Point and Richmond trains will use Montgomery (not Embarcadero) and Dublin/Pleasanton and Fremont trains will use at Embarcadero (not Montgomery).
