*** Press Release ***

On Thursday, October 8, at approximately 5 p.m., a 44 O’Shaughnessy bus traveling northbound on 6th Avenue at Clement Street collided with a bicyclist.

The bicyclist, Mr. Derek Allen, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"This is a terrible tragedy," said Nathaniel P. Ford Sr., Executive Director/CEO of the SFMTA, which operates Muni. “I would like to extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends. Yesterday’s accident is a sad reminder that motorists, buses, trains, bikes and pedestrians often share a single transportation space, which requires all users to remain vigilant.”

The Muni Operator involved in the accident was TommieBarnett, hired in 2008. He has been placed on non-driving status and tested under Muni’s drug and alcohol policies, according to standard procedures.

Muni buses serving the 44 Route were re-routed around the accident scene until 7:55 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing.
