Muni welcomes and encourages bicycle riders to use the exterior bike racks provided on most of our lines. All newer diesel and trolley Muni buses have front-loading bike racks able to hold two bikes each. Historic Streetcars, Cable Cars, and Muni Metro Light Rail Vehicles do not have bike racks, nor do some older vehicles; you are not permitted to bring bicycles on board those vehicles.
The 41-Union bus may not yet have bike racks. All other diesel and trolley bus lines have bike rack-equipped vehicles, but older vehicles may be used on any line when necessary. If a vehicle without a bike rack appears on a line that should have bike racks, you may wait for the next vehicle, which would be expected to have a bike rack.
Placing your bike on a rack takes 3 steps and less than 20 seconds. It is the responsibility of the cyclist to read and comply with the safety rules and instructions listed below for the safe and responsible use of Muni bike racks.
Bikes, folding and non-folding, are not allowed inside any Muni bus, streetcar, or other transit vehicle at any time.
