Bicycle Racks within the Public Right-of-Way (ROW)
The Bicycle Program is currently installing bicycle racks throughout the City. Many of these locations have been suggested by cyclists. We are continually accepting requests. However, guidelines must be met before a location is considered for bicycle rack installation. Please familiarize yourself with the guidelines before making a request. There are also several ordinances pertaining to bicycle racks within the public right-of-way.

Bicycle Rack Requests
To request bicycle rack installation on the public right-of-way or to report a missing/loose rack; please send us an e-mail at bicycle@sfmta.com. Please note the address and cross street when making the request, as well as a contact name and phone number or e-mail address.

Permit for bicycle racks within the public right-of-way
The Municipal Transportation Agency issues permits for bicycle rack installation in the public right-of-way. Although the bicycle racks will be installed by the SFMTA Bicycle Program free of charge, a permit is required if you are a developer, builder, or owner of a building or garage required to install bicycle parking or would like to install your own rack within the public right-of-way.

Bicycle Parking in Garages
San Francisco has legislated the installation of bicycle parking in all City-owned garages and privately-owned garages that rent automobile space to the public.

City-owned and privately-owned garages that rent automobile space to the public are subject to the bicycle parking requirements of the San Francisco Planning Code. Article 1.5 Section 155.2 should be referenced. The Planning Department is responsible for enforcement of Section 155.2. Certain new commercial and renovated buildings, as well as City-owned buildings are subject to othersections of the Planning Code that require bicycle parking and may also require installation of clothes lockers and showers. The Bicycle Program has recently completed a comprehensive report detailing garage compliance.
