Fell Street Queuing Lane and Green Bicycle Lanes

Green bike lane on Fell street

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has been working to reduce conflicts between bicyclists in the bike lane and motorists queuing to enter the filling station at the corner of Fell and Divisadero Streets.  In June, 2010, the SFMTA removed several parking spaces and added a queuing lane in an effort to help those motorists waiting to enter the gas station to avoid blocking the bike lane.  In August, 2010, the bike lane was painted green.  A before-after study shows that, since the addition of the green paint, 40% fewer vehicles stopped while blocking or encroaching upon the bike lane.  The SFMTA will continue to monitor the interactions between bicycle and vehicles entering the filling station.

Fell-Masonic Bicycle Traffic Signal Installed

FellMasonic_photo_graphic

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) joined with bicycle and pedestrian advocates to unveil the first traffic signal in San Francisco with a bicycle symbol. On September 16, 2008, the new signal was installed at the intersection of Fell Street and Masonic Avenue to give bicyclists and pedestrians a dedicated signal phase to cross Masonic Avenue on the popular Panhandle multi-use recreational path.
The new signal provides an exclusive time interval for bicyclists and pedestrians to cross Masonic together while automobiles intending to turn left onto Masonic from Fell are stopped at the traffic signal.  The bicycle component of the new signal uses a bicycle symbol in the familiar green, yellow and red phases to indicate when a bicyclist can cross Masonic.  The pedestrian signal continues to use the white walking figure and the orange hand to direct pedestrian traffic (see signal guide below for a description and graphic of the signals).
