    The Coexist Campaign is a Citywide effort to encourage greater respect between bicyclists and motorists, hopefully resulting in safer roads for all users.

  • How many bicycle collisions were there in San Francisco?
    Since 1998, San Francisco has experienced a marked decline in bicycle related injuries, despite a dramatic rise in the number of bicyclists on City streets.* The year 2004 was the first in that period that has not seen a reduction in bicycle related injury collisions.
  • What is the City of San Francisco doing about bicycle safety?
    DPT is committed to reducing traffic-related collisions throughout San Francisco. We promote a comprehensive approach -engineering, education, and enforcement - to improving bicycle safety.

  • Where can I get more information about bicycle crashes and common causes?
    Get national crash data online from the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center, a clearinghouse for information about health and safety, engineering, advocacy, education, enforcement and access and mobility.

[1] While the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) details 412 bicycle-related collisions for San Francisco in 1998, the Profile of Injury in San Francisco, published by the Department of Public Health (DPH) Injury Center (www.tf.org) shows that the San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division responded to 441 incidents in which bicyclists were injured in 1998.
