Muni Accessibility Advisory Committee (MAAC) Minutes of Members Present: Leslie Clark (Chair), Ed Harley (Secretary), Jewel McGinnis, Bruce Oka, Arden Wheeler, Ed Evans, Janet Copriviza Excused Absent: Bruce Morgan, Jeanne Lynch (Vice-Chair) Staff Present: Virginia Summerell-Rathke, Annette Williams, (Accessible Services) Introductions: Introductions were made in lieu of a roll call. Reading and approval of agenda: The agenda was not approved due to a lack of quorum. Approval of the minutes of September 2005: The minutes were not approved due to a lack of quorum. Report from the Chair: No Report MAAC Award to Muni Employees: There was no award and no new nominations were submitted. Public Comment: There was no public comment at this time. ADA Complaints: The ADA complaints for the month of September 2005 were not available. Discussion of a resolution regarding no smoking in or near a bus shelter: Ed Evans noted that the City of Berkeley has legislation prohibiting smoking in or near a bus shelter, and suggested that the MAAC resolution could draw from the text of Berkeley’s code. Muni Staff will research the legislation. Discussion of MAAC’s Priorities: MAAC’s Priorities that were developed in 2003 were read again, along with the contents of the draft letter from MAAC inviting Acting Executive Director Stuart Sunshine to attend the November meeting (see below). Discussion of SPUR Report: Virginia Summerell-Rathke highlighted some aspects of the recent San Francisco Planning & Urban Research (SPUR) report entitled “MUNI’s Downward Spiral) that might be of concern to the committee. One issue is SPUR’s proposal that increasing stop spacing could make Muni more efficient. Annette Williams noted that the Controller’s Office has announced plans to initiate a study of ways to improve Muni’s cost-efficiency. The study will be done in collaboration with Muni planners. The committee recommended drafting a letter to Muni’s new Planning Director, Bill Lieberman, outlining various concerns including the study, and inviting him to attend a MAAC meeting. Letter to Stuart Sunshine: The draft letter was read for the record. Jewel McGinnis suggested adding a sentence describing the committee’s concern about tight schedules and their impact on passenger safety. The final letter is attached. Member’s questions and comments: Bruce Oka recommended that a letter be sent to Stuart Sunshine inviting him to a future MAAC meeting. Bruce Morgan thanked MAAC for the card and the visits to see him when he was in the hospital. Arden Wheeler expressed concern regarding the lack of seats at the shelter located at O’Farrell & Jones. Annette Williams said she would follow up on the issue. Les Clark expressed concern over the suggestion by SPUR to space the bus stops further away from each other. It was recommended that a copy of SPUR’s report be read before any action is taken.
