Summary of Service Impacts

The annual Bay to Breakers footrace will cause major reroutes and delays Sunday morning. The race starts on Howard from Steuart to 9th Street., runs on Hayes from Market to Divisadero, on Fell from Divisadero to the Golden Gate Park, and on JFK Drive all the way to the Great Highway.

If you're not participating in the race, you are encouraged to avoid areas affected by the Bay to Breakers.

Lines and routes that operate parallel to the course:

  • Routes 5, 31, 38, 71 and N-Owl and Line N will experience crowding and delays.
  • There will be added bus trips on routes 5 and N-Owl; these added trips will be express service at Special Event fares. If you do not want to pay the special event fares, or want to go to stops not served by the express service, be sure to board only the regularly scheduled local service.
  • There will be added Line N Metro service east of 19th Avenue. These trips will not stop at Civic Center, Powell, or Montgomery.

Routes that cross the course:

  • 19, 22, 24, 27, 33, 43 and 47 will be divided into 2 sections, with no sevice between sections. You will have to walk to get from one side of the race to the other, or else take alternate routings.
  • Routes 9X and 10 will route around the course via The Embarcadero.
  • Routes 30 and 45 will not serve south of Mission. Use Route N-OWL or Line N-JUDAH from Market Street to reach Caltrain or Route 9X to access mid-SOMA.
  • Route 49 will not serve north of Mission & South Van Ness. You will have to walk to get from one side of the race to the other, or else take alternate routings, to reach Route 47 for Van Ness service.
  • You can cross the park on routes 18, 28, 29 or 44.
  • Once BART opens, you can take BART from south of Market Street (16th/Mission, 24th/Mission, Glen Park, Balboa Park) to any Market Street stop. Regular BART fares apply. A Muni Adult Fast Pass may be used within San Francisco.

Routes that normally go to the Ferry Building:

Routes 14, 21 and 31 will only go to the Transbay Terminal. The 21 will also re-route over most of its route.

Market and Mission Street lines:

  • Some routes on Market and Mission - 6, 9, 14, 26, 49, 71, K-L-M Owls - will only go to Market, 10th or 11th Street.
  • Before 8 a.m.: use routes 5 and 21 between Market and 8th Streets and the Transbay Terminal.
  • After 8 a.m.: use Market Street Metro subway service.
  • After 8 a.m.: Adult Fast Pass holders may use BART between Market Street stations and Mission District stations to cross the course for no charge. All others may use BART to cross the course at their regular BART fare.

Reroute and delay details

The following details are not necessarily final. Please check back for possible updates.

You are strongly urged to call the San Francisco 3-1-1 Customer Service Center before race day for personalized trip assistance. The following is general information that may help if you are unable to reach the Transit Information Center, and may not be the most efficient for your particular trip. Expect crowding and allow a lot of extra time for your trip.

Line Time Affected Service Details
F-MARKET & WHARVES Approximately 7 a.m. until clear
  • Line divided into 2 sections: Castro to 11th Street and Ferry Bldg. to Fisherman's Wharf. No service between sections.
  • Before 8 a.m.: use route 5 or 21 to downtown at Market & 7th, a walk of .5 mile. Expect delays when crossing the race route. Only route 21 goes all the way between 7th and Steuart streets.
  • After 8 a.m.: use Metro Subway service between Van Ness and Embarcadero Station.
KLM-OWL 7:30 a.m. until end of Sunday morning Owl service
  • No service east of 10th Street.
  • Before 8 a.m.: use route 5 or 21 to downtown at Market & 7th. Expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • After 8 a.m.: use Metro Subway service.
N-OWL 5:45 a.m. until end of Sunday morning Owl service No reroute. Delays and crowding expected. Express inbound service requires Special Service fare. Regular service for regular fare does not run express.
T-OWL 8 a.m. until end of Sunday morning Owl service No service on Market Street. Transfer to/from route 21 or Muni Metro at Embarcadero Station.
5-Fulton 5 a.m. - 3 p.m. No reroute. Delays and crowding expected. Express inbound service requires Special Service fare. Regular service for regular fare does not run express.

6-Parnassus

 7 - 10 a.m.
  • No service east of Market and Page.
  • Before 8 a.m.: transfer to route 5 or 21 to downtown at Market & 7th, a walk of .6 mile. Expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • After 8 a.m. use Metro Subway service at Van Ness Station.

9-San Bruno

 7 - 10 a.m.
  • No service north of Mission and 11th.
  • Before 8 a.m.: transfer to route 5 or 21 to downtown at Market & 7th, a walk of .5 mile. Expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • After 8 a.m. use Metro Subway service at Van Ness Station.
9X-Bay Shore Express 7 - 9 a.m.
  • Reroute around South-of Market start area onto the Embarcadero.
  • Toward Fisherman’s Wharf: Use Route 12 stops between Folsom & Fremont and the Ferry Building. Stops resume on Columbus north of Washington.
  • Toward City College: Route 9X detours at Broadway. Use Route 12 stops between Washington & the Embarcadero and Harrison & 2nd.
10-Townsend 7 - 9 a.m.
  • Reroute around South-of Market start area onto the Embarcadero.
  • Toward Fisherman’s Wharf: Use Route 12 stops between Folsom & Fremont and the Ferry Building. Stops resume on Sansome north of Washington.
  • Toward City College: Route 10 detours at Broadway. Use Route 12 stops between Washington & the Embarcadero to Harrison & 2nd.
12-Folsom/Pacific 7 - 9 a.m.

Trips that only serve north of Howard will miss stops south of the Ferry Building. Board in front of the Ferry Building.

14-Mission early reroute 5 a.m. - 6:30 a.m. No service east of Transbay Terminal
14-Mission later reroute 6:30 - 10 a.m.
  • No service east of Mission & 11th.
  • Before 8 a.m.: transfer to route 5 or 21 to downtown at Market & 7th. Expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • After 8 a.m.: use Market Street Metro Subway service from Van Ness Station.
18-46th Avenue Beginning of service until clear
  • No stops between Irving and Fulton.
  • Southbound trips may leave early.
19-Polk 7 - 10 a.m.
  • Route divided into 2 sections: North of Mission, and south of Harrison.
  • No service between 8th & Harrison and 8th & Mission.
  • You can try to walk between Harrison and Mission, about .4 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the northern section of the route to the southern section, take Route 12-FOLSOM/PACIFIC (destination 26th & Mission; not all trips go this far) at Pacific to Harrison & 8th, or
  1. Take Route N-Owl (before 8 a.m.) or Line N-JUDAH (after 8 a.m.) to Folsom & The Embarcadero.
  2. Take Route 10-TOWNSEND or 12-FOLSOM/PACIFIC, whichever comes first, to 8th Street, where you can get Route 19.
  • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section, take Route 12-FOLSOM/PACIFIC from Folsom & 8th to Polk.
21-Hayes 7 - 11 a.m.
  • Uses Route 5 routing between Stanyan and Market: On Fulton between Stanyan and Central, on McAllister between Central and Market.
  • No service east of Transbay Terminal
22-Fillmore
 7:30 - 10:30 a.m.
  • Route divided into 2 sections: North of McAllister, and south of Haight.
  • No service between Haight & Fillmore and Fillmore & McAllister.
  • You can try to walk between McAllister and Haight, about .5 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the northern section of the route to the southern section:
    1. At McAllister, transfer to Route 5-FULTON east to Civic Center Station.
    2. Transfer to Route N-Owl (before 8 a.m.) or any Metro line (after 8 a.m.) west to Church Street, where you can transfer to Route 22.
  • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section:
    1. At Church and Market, transfer to Route N-Owl (before 8 a.m.) or any Metro line (after 8 p.m.) east to Civic Center Station.
    2. Transfer to Route 5-FULTON west on McAllister at 7th to Fillmore, where you can transfer again to Route 22.
  • It may be faster to use some other combination of routes and lines or BART in place of Route 22. Call the San Francisco 3-1-1 Customer Service Center for personalized trip assistance.
24-Divisadero 7:30 - 11 a.m.
  • Route divided into 2 sections: North of McAllister, and south of Haight.
  • No service between Haight & Divisadero and Divisadero & McAllister.
  • You can try to walk between McAllister and Haight, about .5 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the northern section of the route to the southern section:
    1. At McAllister, transfer to Route 5-FULTON east to Civic Center Station.
    2. Transfer to Route N-Owl (before 8 a.m.) or any Metro line (after 8 a.m.) west to Castro Street, where you can transfer to Route 24.
  • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section:
    1. At Church and Market, transfer to Route N-Owl (before 8 a.m.) or any Metro line (after 8 a.m.) east to Civic Center Station.
    2. Transfer to Route 5-FULTON west on McAllister at 7th to Divisadero, where you transfer to Route 24.
  • It may be faster to use some other combination of routes and lines or BART in place of Route 24. Call the San Francisco 3-1-1 Customer Service Center for personalized trip assistance.
26-Valencia 7:30 - 11 a.m.
  • No service east of 11th Street.
  • Before 8 a.m.: use route 5 or 21 to downtown at Market & 7th, a walk of .5 mile. Expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • After 8 a.m. use Market Street Metro Subway service.
27-Bryant 7 - 10 a.m.
  • Route divided into 2 sections: North of Mission, and south of Harrison.
  • No service between 5th & Harrison and 5th & Mission.
  • You can try to walk between Harrison and Mission, about .4 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the northern section of the route to the southern section:
    1. Transfer to Route N-Owl (before 8 a.m.) or Line N-JUDAH (after 8 a.m.) to Folsom & The Embarcadero.
    2. Transfer to southbound Route 12-FOLSOM/PACIFIC to 5th Street, where you can transfer to Route 27.
  • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section:
    1. Take Route 12-FOLSOM/PACIFIC from Folsom & 5th to the Ferry Building.
    2. Transfer to Route N-Owl from Folsom and The Embarcadero to 5th Street (before 8 a.m.) or Line N-JUDAH Metro from Folsom and The Embarcadero station to Powell Street station (after 8 a.m.). Take to Castro Street where you can transfer to Route 24.
  • It may be faster to use some other combination of routes and lines or BART in place of Route 24. Call the San Francisco 3-1-1 Customer Service Center for personalized trip assistance.

28-19th Avenue

 5 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. No reroute. Delays and crowding expected.

29-Sunset

 5 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. No reroute. Delays and crowding expected.

30-Stockton

 7 - 9:30 a.m.
  • No service south of Mission.
  • To get to Caltrain:
    • Before 8:00 a.m.: Transfer to route N-Owl or T-Owl eastbound on Market to Caltrain.
    • After 8:00 a.m.: For service from North Beach to Caltrain, take Route 9X from Columbus & Stockton to 4th & Harrison, then walk to Caltrain
    • Alternatively, take Route 30 to Market Street, then transfer to line N or K/T to Caltrain.
  • To get from Caltrain:
    • Before 8 a.m.: Take Route N-Owl or T-Owl from southbound 4th between Townsend and King to Market at Kearny.
    • After 8 a.m.: Walk to Bryant & 4th and take Route 9X to Union & Columbus
    • Alternatively, take Line N or K/T to Montgomery Station, then transfer to Route 30.
31-Balboa Beginning of service until 10:30 a.m. No service east of Transbay Terminal. Delays and crowding expected.
33-Stanyan 7 - 10:30 a.m.
  • Route divided into 2 sections: North of Fulton, and south of Haight.
  • No service between sections.
  • The section north of Fulton & Stanyan will run only once each half hour.
  • You can try to walk between Fulton and Haight, about .4 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the northern section of the route to the southern section:
    1. Instead of taking Route 33 take route 1, 2, 31 or 38 west to 6th Avenue or Route 5 to 8th Avenue.
    2. Transfer to Route 44-O'SHAUGHNESSY south to Lincoln and Judah.
    3. Transfer to Route 71-HAIGHT-NORIEGA east to Haight and Cole, where you can take Route 33.
  • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section:
    1. Take Line N-JUDAH west to 9th & Judah.
    2. Take Route 44-O'SHAUGHNESSY north to whichever of the following streets is closest to your destination, then transfer going east:
      • Fulton (5-FULTON)
      • Balboa (31-BALBOA),
      • Geary (38-GEARY),
      • Clement (2-CLEMENT), or
      • California (1-CALIFORNIA)
 

38-Geary

 5:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. No reroute. Delays and crowding expected.
43-Masonic 7 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
  • Route divided into 2 sections: North of Hayes, and south of Oak.
  • No service between sections.
  • You can try to walk between Hayes and Oak, about .1 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the northern section of the route to the southern section:
    • Consider using Route 28-19th AVENUE from the Marina District to the Sunset District, or
    1. Instead of taking Route 43, take route 1, 2, 31 or 38 west to 6th Avenue or Route 5 or 21 (at Fulton) west to 8th Avenue.
    2. Transfer to Route 44-O'SHAUGHNESSY south to Lincoln and Judah where you can take Route 43-MASONIC.
  • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section:
    • Consider using Route 28-19th AVENUE from the Sunset District to the Marina District, or
    • Take Route 44-O'SHAUGHNESSY north from 9th and Judah to whichever of the following streets is closest to your destination, then transfer going east:
      • Fulton (5-FULTON)
      • Balboa (31-BALBOA),
      • Geary (38-GEARY),
      • Clement (2-CLEMENT), or
      • California (1-CALIFORNIA).

 
44-O'Shaughnessy 7 - 11:30 a.m.
  • No stops in park.
  • No stop going northbound at 9th & Irving or 9th & Lincoln. Use stop at 9th & Judah.

45-Union/Stockton

 7 - 9 a.m.
  • No service south of Mission.
  • To get to Caltrain:
    • Before 8:00 a.m.: Transfer to route N-Owl or T-Owl eastbound on Market to Caltrain.
    • After 8:00 a.m.: For service from North Beach to Caltrain, take Route 9X from Columbus & Stockton to 4th & Harrison, then walk to Caltrain
    • Alternatively, take Route 45 to Market Street, then transfer to line N or K/T to Caltrain.
  • To get from Caltrain:
    • Before 8 a.m.: Take Route N-Owl or T-Owl from southbound 4th between Townsend and King to Market at Kearny.
    • After 8 a.m.: Walk to Bryant & 4th and take Route 9X to Union & Columbus
    • Alternatively, take Line N or K/T to Montgomery Station, then transfer to Route 45.
47-Van Ness 7 - 10:30 a.m.
  • Route divided into 2 sections: North of McAllister, and south of Market.
  • No service between sections.
  • You can try to walk between McAllister and Market, about .3 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the northern section of the route to the southern section, transfer to Route 12-FOLSOM/PACIFIC east on Pacific after Van Ness to Harrison Street, where the Route 12 shares stops with Route 47.
  • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section, transfer to Route 12-FOLSOM/PACIFIC east on Folsom instead of riding Route 47. Transfer to the Van Ness portion of Route 47 at Jackson and Van Ness.

 
49-Van Ness/
Mission		 7:15 - 10:30 a.m.
  • No service north of Mission and South Van Ness.
  • Use Route 47-Van Ness for service on Van Ness Avenue.
  • You can try to walk between Mission & South Van Ness and Route 47 service at McAllister, about .5 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the Route 47 Van Ness Avenue section to Route 49 Mission Street service, transfer to 12-FOLSOM/PACIFIC east on Pacific after Van Ness to any stop on Folsom after 11th for destinations in the inner Mission District, or stay on Route 12 to 26th & Mission, where you can transfer to a 14 or 49-line bus.
  • To ride from the Route 49 Mission Street service to the Route 47 Van Ness Avenue section:
    • Transfer to Route 12-FOLSOM/PACIFIC north on Folsom instead of riding Route 49-line or transfer to Route 12 at 26th & Mission.
    • Transfer to the Van Ness portion of Route 47 at Jackson and Van Ness.

 
71-Haight/Noriega 7:30 a.m. until 10 a.m.
  • No service east of 10th Street.
  • Expect delays and crowding.
  • Before 8 a.m.: use route 5 or 21 to downtown at Market & 7th. Expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • After 8 a.m.: use Market Street. Metro Subway service.
74X-CultureBus Beginning of service until clear Museum and 9th & Lincoln stops are replaced with a stop at Fulton & 8th. CultureBus fare cannot be used with Bay to Breaker Special Service or vice versa.
108-Treasure Island 5 a.m. until Fremont off ramp reopens Fremont off ramp closed. 108 will use 5th Street off ramp and backtrack to Transbay Terminal. No stops are affected but delays are possible.
