Key Design Elements of the Proposal
Parking
The modification of this intersection would result in the loss of approximately 12 spaces.
6 or 7 spaces may be recoverable in the immediate vicinity of this project.
There is also an opportunity to regulate and or meter additional on-street parking where it is presently unregulated.
These changes could help discourage longer term parking which could increase the parking turn-over rates and serve to increase the availability of parking in the area.
Relocated Bus Stop
The plan proposes to relocate the existing near-side, inbound San Bruno bus stop (in front of the Popeye's Chicken Shop) to a new far-side location. This heavily used bus stop is presently situated on a crowded 9' wide sidewalk. The new location would be located on a wider less-congested sidewalk. This change would require passengers transferring off the San Bruno Line and traveling towards Daly City on the 14 Line to cross-back over Mission Avenue. Passengers traveling inbound towards the Mission District and Downtown would only have to cross Geneva Avenue and not Mission.
New Mission Street Bus Bulbs
The plan proposes to create two new far-side bus bulbs on Mission Street north and south of Geneva Avenue. These changes will improve the waiting experience for transit customers by creating a wider, more spacious sidewalk waiting area and they will also reduce the delays for transit customers on Mission Street as the buses will no longer have to wait to re-enter traffic.
Left Turn Pockets On Mission
The proposed design includes two new opposing left turn pockets on Mission Street. These turn pockets will help reduce the amount of delays attributable to left turning vehicles blocking the through traffic on Mission. This change will improve the flow of traffic on Mission and could also help reduce congestion related delays on the Mission Street buses.
