Beginning this April, the Transit Effectiveness Project (TEP) will share preliminary proposals for Muni service changes and reliability improvements. The TEP is the first comprehensive review of Muni in a generation, and is being led by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) and the City’s Controller’s Office. The TEP’s preliminary proposals reflect extensive conversations with customers who have shared their vision of a future Muni that is more reliable, quicker and more frequent. The TEP’s preliminary proposals aim to transform Muni into a first-rate transit system that reduces congestion, decreases pollution and gets people where they want to go efficiently and safely. Changes have been proposed for most Muni routes ranging from increased frequency on our busiest lines to route eliminations where we have the fewest customers. Proposals include: - Strategies to improve on-time performance and reliability systemwide; - More frequent service, quicker boardings and fewer delays on our busiest routes including the N-Judah, 9X, 14L, 22 and 38L; - New routes and route extensions to reflect changing travel patterns over the last 25 years; - More service on busy routes to reduce crowding and travel time; - Elimination of routes or route segments with low ridership to increase resources for improvements – specifically, lines 26, 53, 56 and 66 are proposed to be discontinued and some portions of lines such as the 2, 3, 4, 35, 36, 37 and 39 would also be discontinued; - Combining two current lines into one is also proposed to conserve resources and deliver more frequent service; and - Amenities at transit stops such as more seating and NextMuni signs, so customers know when the next bus or train will arrive. To help us shape these proposals to make Muni into a transit system that works for you, we’ve scheduled 11 community meetings throughout San Francisco. With your help, a revitalized Muni system will not only benefit current transit customers, but will improve mobility for everyone who lives, works in or visits San Francisco. Interpretation in Cantonese and Spanish will be provided. There will be a Fast Pass raffle at each meeting.
