Updated July 13, 2011
In 2010, while preparing its two-year operating budget proposal for Fiscal Year (FY) 2010-11 and FY 2011-12, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all surface transportation in San Francisco, was forced to declare a fiscal emergency to bridge projected budget shortfalls of $56 and $45 million respectively. Proposed funding solutions to bridge these shortfalls included transit service modifications and fee and fine increases. Also proposed were transit fare increases as determined by the Automatic Indexing Plan, a formula based on the Bay Area Labor Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U). Previously, the SFMTA Board reviewed and adopted the Automatic Indexing Plan for smaller, more predictable fare increases partly based on the CPI-U and factored in during the budgetary process.
Community input was sought to discuss the various funding options during a number of Public Hearings held in February, March and April of 2010. As required by the City Charter, advertisements publicizing each of these hearings were placed well in advance in the San Francisco Chronicle and other newspapers. Multi-lingual ads were also placed in prominent Chinese and Spanish newspapers in San Francisco.
The SFMTA Board of Directors approved the SFMTA’s two-year budget for FY 2010-11 and FY 2011-12 in spring 2010. Though no fare increases were approved for FY 2010-11, the fare increases as reflected in this brochure were approved for implementation for FY 2011-12 during the budget process in 2010. These changes take effect on July 1, 2011. The regular $2 cash fare and $.75 cash fare for Seniors, Disabled and Youth are unchanged.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) will increase the price of passes, Muni Passports, interagency monthly stickers, cable car fares, special event fares, cable car vehicle rental fees and historic streetcar vehicle rental fees.
The following document compares Fiscal Year (FY) 2010-2011 amounts through June 30 with FY 2011-2012 amounts effective July 1. July passes and stickers purchased in June will be charged the amount effective for July 1.
