Area: Eastern San Francisco
Date & Time: Effective April 7, 2007
On Saturday, April 7, 2007, the SFMTA will implement improvements to Muni service between Fisherman’s Wharf and City College. Changes to the 9X, 10, 15 and 54 bus lines are coordinated with the new T-Third Light Rail Line to offer expanded service to southeast San Francisco. J and N changes improve service to Caltrain. The new T also provides more service between Castro Station and downtown.
The T-Third is Muni’s first fully accessible light rail line. All stations feature level boarding at all doors. The 9X/9AX/9BX, 10-Townsend and 54-Felton lines are also fully accessible.

New service details
Beginning Saturday, April 7, 2007, changes will be implemented to the 9X, 10-Townsend, 15-Third, 54-Felton, J-Church and N-Judah lines, in coordination with the start of full service on the T-Third Light Rail Line.
Muni Metro Service Changes
Changes to the J-Church and the N-Judah coordinate with the new T-Third to offer improved Metro service:
- The T-Third Light Rail Line begins full service, connecting the Third Street neighborhoods to the Muni Metro system
- Full service begins April 7, 2007. T-Third route
begins in Sunnydale, proceeds along Third Street,
around the Embarcadero, enters the Market Street
Subway and terminates at Castro Station
- Note: early weekend mornings (approximately 5-6 a.m. Sat., 5-8 a.m. Sun.), T-Third service is provided by buses until
subway opens, as
on other Metro lines,
- J-Church terminates at 4th & King during peak hours only. During off-peak hours it terminates at the Embarcadero station
- N-Judah terminates at Embarcadero station (not 4th & King)
- Caltrain is now served by two Metro lines—the J-Church and T-Third—during weekday peak hours. During off-peak hours and weekends the T-Third serves Caltrain
- S-Castro Shuttle is replaced by the T-Third, offering expanded hours and more frequent service between Castro and Embarcadero Stations
- The 9X and the discontinued 15-Third route will be combined into an expanded 9X (AX/BX) Express bus line between Fisherman’s Wharf in the north and City College in the south, operating seven days a week approximately 5 a.m.-12:30 a.m.
- The 9X and the discontinued 15–Third combine into an
improved 9X/9AX/9BX express bus line:
- Seven days a week,
5 a.m.-12:30 a.m.
- Extended north to Fisherman’s
Wharf and south to
City College to pick up the
discontinued 15 route
- 9AX and 9BX replace the
9X during peak periods in
the peak direction for
faster and more convenient
service
- The 10-Townsend will pick up two south of Market stops from the retired 15 line route
- New southbound route serves
the discontinued 15-Third line stops at Sansome / Sutter Streets and at
2nd / Stevenson (Market) Streets. Line
resumes regular route at Mission &
1st Streets for service to the Transbay
Terminal, and proceeds south on
Second Street
- The 54-Felton will be rerouted off of Third Street and onto Newhall Street
(until further notice)
- Rerouted along Newhall
Street off of Third Street.
Crosses Third Street at
four intersections
- 15-Third replaced by the T-Third and improved 9X/9AX/9BX
- T-Third replaces 15-Third on Third Street
- 9X (AX/BX) picks up the discontinued 15-Third route at northern and southern ends
- Rerouted 10-Townsend picks up key 15-Third line stops in the South of Market area

Farewell to the 15-Third
Thank you and farewell to the 15-Third bus line.
Public transportation on Third Street began as a horsecar line and converted to electric streetcar service around the turn of the century. Buses replaced the 15 streetcar line beginning June 23, 1940.
On a regular weekday, buses on the 15-Third line traveled approximately 2,500 miles, taking passengers from City College to Fisherman’s Wharf and back. After 67 years of service to the public, the 15-Third bus line retires April 7, 2007.
The 15-Third route will be replaced at the northern and southern ends by an expanded 9X/9AX/9BX bus line and by the T-Third Light Rail Line on Third Street.
