Lines: K, L, M OverviewATTENTION Effective January 29, 2007, through March 22, 2008 As of Saturday morning, January 27, 2007, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency successfully concluded Phase I of the Metro Improvement Project, replacing the Metro Overhead lines between Embarcadero Station and Castro Station. Since January 29, 2007, the project has been in Phase II, with construction between Castro and West Portal stations. Construction continues effective January 2 through March 22, 2008, during the expanded Twin Peaks Tunnel Improvement Project. Forest Hill Station and West Portal Station close earlier, at 9:00 p.m., Monday through Friday for the duration of the projects, which are scheduled to last into Spring 2008. All other subway stations follow the regular Metro schedule and remain open until about 1:00 a.m. on weekdays during Phase II. DetailsAbout The Metro Improvement Project:The purpose of the Metro Improvement Project is to replace the overhead wire system that provides power for the Metro cars in the subway. It is a critical upgrade to the current system. Once complete, the upgraded system will increase reliability and reduce maintenance costs. Phase I of the project started in January 2006 and has replaced the overhead wires between Embarcadero and Church stations. Phase II started in January 2007, and includes the overhead wires west of Castro to West Portal. About the Twin Peaks Tunnel Improvement ProjectBeginning Wednesday, January 2, 2008, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) performs additional work in the Twin Peaks Tunnel and is making over the West Portal Station as part of a major initiative to upgrade those facilities and to improve Muni Metro service. SFMTA management has put together an aggressive, 65-day, accelerated schedule to ensure these important repairs are made as quickly as possible and with as little disruption to neighbors as possible. This repair work is being done on a schedule similar to the Metro Improvement Project. Specifically, the late-night work is being performed Monday through Friday nights from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Muni bus shuttles continue to operate between West Portal and Van Ness stations after 9 p.m. With the improved track bed and new overhead wire system in place, Muni Metro lines that use the tunnel will operate through it at higher speeds, offering more reliable service and a smoother ride. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Read the press release about the Twin Peaks Tunnel Improvement Project. Muni Service Impacts For Phase II and the Twin Peaks Tunnel Improvement Project:K, L, & M shuttle buses run between Van Ness and West Portal Stations Monday-Friday starting about 9:00 p.m. During construction, there is no Metro subway service between Forest Hill and West Portal stations after 9:00 p.m., Monday –Friday. However, rail service operates between Embarcadero and Castro, and from West Portal to outer terminals. While the two subway stations are closed, shuttle buses run at roughly six-minute intervals between Van Ness and West Portal stations. A Metro rail shuttle also operates in the subway between Embarcadero and Castro stations to serve Castro and Church stations, supplementing T-Third service to Castro. K, L, and M passengers traveling from downtown to outer terminals can take Metro cars to Van Ness, Church, or Castro Station and board the shuttle buses at F Line island stops. Passengers traveling toward downtown areas can get off from K, L, and M Metro cars at West Portal where they can get on shuttle buses going to Castro, Church or Van Ness stations, and from there catch the streetcars in the subway or on the surface going to downtown. Temporary Bus Stops: Shuttle buses use the regular F Line stops on Market between Van Ness and Noe, and then proceed to Castro Station, Forest Hill Station & West Portal Station. J-Church, N-Judah, T-Third service:The J-Church and N-Judah lines are not affected by this project. The T-Third Line runs inbound to Sunnydale from Castro Station after 9:00 pm on weekdays. Accessible Services:See Accessible Alerts. Saturday-Sunday Metro Service: Saturday and Sunday evening Metro rail service is not affected, and all the stations in the subway close at their usual time, at about 1:00 a.m. Saturday morning Metro service starts one hour later at 7:00 a.m, instead of 6:00 a.m., for the duration of the project. Owl bus service is extended to 7:00 a.m. During the baseball season, Metro Shuttle service pre-game continues to operate between Castro and Caltrain Depot. Post-game passengers can take a shuttle train, N-Judah, or T-Third to Embarcadero and connect with the J, K, L, and M service. After weekday evening games, they can ride the T to Castro or the N to Van Ness to connect with the KLM shuttle bus. SchedulesSince the two affected Metro stations close at 9:00 p.m., the last streetcar arriving and leaving Castro, Forest Hill and West Portal from both directions may be earlier than 9:00 p.m. See station signage or station agents for exact scheduled times or see below Regular Owl service and schedules are maintained on all Metro lines.
