  • Rail lines: J, K, L, M, N, T.
  • Area: Downtown.
  • Dates: Tuesday, Jan. 5, through late April, 2010.
  • Time: All hours of service.

On Tuesday, January 5, the street elevator at Powell Station will be closed to replace the structure which houses the elevator entrance at the street level.  The elevator will be shut down for approximately three and one-half months, until late April, during construction.

People who rely on the elevators to enter and exit at Powell Street would instead enter and exit at the Hallidie Plaza Elevator at Market and 5th streets.

During the period of construction, hours of operation for the Hallidie Plaza Elevator will be:

  • 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Friday
  • 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday
  • 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday

BART/Muni Construction Project

The elevator closure is necessary as part of a major project to reconstruct the street level enclosures on the elevators of the BART/Muni Metro Stations at Civic Center, Embarcadero, Montgomery and Powell.  Replacement work is necessary to maintain compliance with state standards, extend the life of the equipment and improve the reliability of the elevator doors.
