Changes from Last Year

Summary of Service Impacts
The annual Bay to Breakers footrace will cause major reroutes and delays Sunday morning. The race starts on Howard from Steuart to 9th Street., runs on Hayes from Market to Divisadero, on Fell from Divisadero to the Golden Gate Park, and on JFK Drive all the way to the Great Highway.
If you're not participating in the race, you are encouraged to avoid areas affected by the Bay to Breakers.
Lines that operate parallel to the course:
- 5, 31, 38, 71,N-Owl, and N lines will experience heavier than normal crowds and delays.
- There will be added trips on the 5 line; these added trips will be express service at Special Event fares. If you do not want to pay the special event fares, or want to go to stops not served by the express service, be sure to board only the regularly scheduled local service.
- There will be added N Metro service east of 19th Avenue. These trips will not stop at Civic Center, Powell, or Montgomery.
Lines that cross the course:
- 18, 19, 22, 24, 27, 33, 43, and 47 will be divided into 2 sections, with no sevice between sections. You will have to walk to get from one side of the race to the other, or else take alternate routings.
- 9X, 10 will route around the course via The Embarcadero.
- 30 and 45 will not serve south of Mission. Use the N-OWL or N-JUDAH from Market Street to reach Caltrain, or the 9X to access mid-SOMA.
- The 49 will not serve north of Mission & South Van Ness. You will have to walk to get from one side of the race to the other, or else take alternate routings, to reach the 47 line for Van Ness service.
- You can cross the park on the 28-19th AVENUE, 29-SUNSET, or 44-O'SHAUGHNESSEY lines.
- Once BART opens, you can take BART from south of Market Street to any Market Street stop. Regular BART fares apply.
Lines that normally go to the Ferry Building:
14, 21, 31 will only go to the Transbay Terminal. The 21 will also re-route over most of its route.
Market and Mission Street lines:
- Some lines on Market and Mission, 6, 9, 14, 26, 49, 71, K-L-M Owls, will only go to 10th or 11th Street.
- Before 8:00am, use lines 5 and 21 between Market and 8th Streets and the Transbay Terminal.
- After 8:00am, use Market Street Metro subway service.
- After 8:00am, Adult Fast Pass holders may use BART between Market Street stations and Mission District stations to cross the course for no charge. All others may use BART to cross the course at their normal BART fare.

The San Francisco 3-1-1 Customer Service Center is open 24 hours a day. You are encouraged to call prior to race day to avoid long holding times.
Express Service and Fares
Muni will provide special pre- and post-race express service for the Bay-to-Breakers Race for Muni's Special Service fare. There will also be regular Muni service available for regular fares, starting at about 5am on Sunday.
Special Fares for the Bay-to-Breakers Express Service:
- Adults (age 18-64): $7 cash
- Seniors (age 65+), Disabled (with valid ID), and Youth (age 5-17): $5 cash
- $3 for all persons with a valid Muni pass, Passport or pass equivalent
- Children under 5 are free.
- Cash fares paid on Muni pre-race express vehicles will receive a special transfer, not an event sticker.
The special fares are for cash, or cash plus a valid Muni pass or pass equivalent. Muni transfers and tokens are not good for the express service.
Special pre-race Muni service fare media may be purchased from 5:00am to 8:00am at the following locations: on the pre-race express vehicles; at the West Portal, Forest Hill, Castro Street, Church Street and Van Ness Avenue Metro stations; and at boarding locations on La Playa at Judah, 19th Avenue at Judah, and Fulton Street at 47th Avenue. Tickets for the post-race express service will be sold at the South Tunnel exit at the Polo Field in Golden Gate Park. You must have pre-purchased your fare to board a post-race express vehicle. The special fare stickers and tickets will be good for all Muni service, except cable cars, until 5:00pm on Sunday.
Pre-Race Express Service, 5:45am to 8am
- Special Event fares apply.
- This is in addition to regular Muni service on these lines. If you do not want to pay the special event fare, you will need to take the regularly scheduled local service.
- The 5-FULTON line will provide express bus service from Fulton Street & 47th Avenue to the Transbay Terminal at 1st & Mission Streets. The buses will make all stops on the 5 line to Fulton Street & Masonic Avenue, and then operate non-stop to the Transbay Terminal.
- The N-OWL will provide regular (local) bus service from Judah & La Playa to the Transbay Terminal. The buses will make all stops on the N-Owl line to Carl & Cole Streets, and
and terminate at 4th Street and Townsend Street (CalTrain).
- N-JUDAH Metro streetcars will operate from 19th Avenue to the Embarcadero Station. The streetcars will provide local service to the Van Ness Avenue Station, and then operate non-stop to the Embarcadero Station. Proof of Payment is in effect on Muni Metro.
- Metro streetcars will provide express service from West Portal Station to Embarcadero Station. The cars will stop at the Castro Street, Church Street, and Van Ness Avenue stations, and then operate non-stop to the Embarcadero Station. Proof of Payment is in effect on Muni Metro.
Post-Race Service, 10:00am - 2:30pm
Express bus service will be provided from Golden Gate Park to Downtown only.
Riders must have purchased a special fare sticker or ticket before they board the post-race express bus, so that the buses can depart as quickly as possible. Special events fares apply. Stops are on request as follows:
- Martin Luther King Jr. Drive at Sunset Boulevard (south-southwest of the Polo Field)
- Turk at Masonic
- Golden Gate at Fillmore
- Golden Gate at Van Ness
- Market at Powell
- Transbay Terminal
Extra N-JUDAH streetcar service, with extra trains until 2 p.m., will be available 2 blocks south of the park on Judah Street, from 34th Avenue to Caltrain. The N-JUDAH serves all downtown Muni/BART stations, continuing to Caltrain. Regular fares will be charged. Your special transfer or race sticker is good for regular service until 5:00pm. Proof of Payment is in effect on Muni Metro.
On race day, look for Muni personnel wearing bright day-glo vests. They'll be happy to answer any questions and help you get to where you want to go.
Re-route and delay details
You are strongly urged to call Muni's Transit Information Center before race day for personalized trip assistance. The following is general information that may help if you are unable to reach the Transit Information Center, and may not be the most efficient for your particular trip. Expect crowds and allow a lot of extra time for your trip.

- The 6:20am trip from the Legion of Honor will cross the park via a detour. No stops on Great Highway.
- On later trips, the line will be divided into 2 sections: North of Golden Gate Park (to LaPlaya & Cabrillo), and south of the park (to 48th & Judah via 48th & Lincoln).
- Service is scheduled for every 20 minutes but is subject to traffic delays. No service between sections.
- If you want to walk along the beach to go between stops on either side of the park, it is about a mile's walk. However, this is at the end of the race and you may find it too crowded.
- To ride from the northern section to the southern section:
- Take the 5-FULTON to 25th and Fulton.
- Take the 29-SUNSET south to Judah and Sunset. If you are going to Stonestown, stay on the 29-line.
- Then take the N-JUDAH west to 48th and Judah, where you can get the 18-line.
- To ride from the southern section to the northern section:
- If you are coming from Stonestown, take the 28-19TH AVENUE or 29-SUNSET from Stonestown to Fulton Street and skip to step 4.
- Otherwise, take the 23-MONTEREY, L-TARAVAL, 71-NORIEGA, or N-JUDAH to Sunset Boulevard.
- Take the 29-SUNSET north to Fulton.
- Then take the 5-FULTON west to La Playa and Cabrillo, where you can get the 18-line.
- Detour schedules toward Stonestown are scheduled to resume at 1:40pm, with regular stops on the Great Highway scheduled to resume in both directions at about 3:00pm

- Take a 12-FOLSOM/PACIFIC north on Folsom instead of riding the 49-line, or transfer to the 12-line at 26th & Mission.
- Transfer to the Van Ness portion of the 47-line at Jackson and Van Ness.
