On December 31, New Year's Eve:
- Muni travel, including cable cars, is free from 8 p.m.
New Year's Eve until 6 a.m. New Year's Day.
- Customers are encouraged to use the Metro to get into and
out of the Downtown area.
- Additional Metro service from 8 p.m. to 2:15 a.m. from West Portal to Caltrain and until 4 a.m. from Embarcadero to West Portal Station.
- J, K, L, M, and N Metro lines are operating on their regular
weekday schedule, until shortly before 1 a.m..
- Owl service: Extra service on Muni Owl Lines (1 a.m. to 5 a.m service): 5 Fulton, 14 Mission, 22 Fillmore, 24 Divisadero, 38 Geary, 90 Owl, 91 Owl, and L and N Owl motor coach service. Frequency will be shortened from 30 to 15 minutes.
- Extra Owl service is subject to change, based on operating
conditions.
- The San Francisco 311 Customer Service Center, is open all night, as ususal, for travel assistance.
- The F-Market and Wharves line is using buses after 4 p.m. There will be reroutes only if necessary.
Other Transit Systems
- BART:
- There are no flash passes this year. Passengers are encouraged to buy two-way tickets at the start of the evening to avoid long lines for return tickets at the end of the evening.
- BART will have extended service that evening. The last trains will leave the end point stations at approximately 3 a.m. BART trains will operate trains every 20 minutes with augmented special train service to accommodate the larger crowds after midnight. To help ease the crowding at the Embarcadero and Montgomery Stations, the following will be in effect after 8 p.m.:
- Trains on the Pittsburg/Bay Point and Richmond lines will not stop at the Embarcadero Station. They will stop at Montgomery Station. After the fireworks, passengers returning on the Pittsburg/Bay Point and Richmond lines will pick up the trains back at Montgomery as well.
- Trains on the Dublin/Pleasanton and Fremont lines will stop at Embarcadero Station, but not at Montgomery Street. After the fireworks, passengers going to Dublin/Pleasanton and Fremont will also catch the trains at Embarcadero for their return trip.
- Last trains from Embarcadero:
- To Dublin/Pleasanton at 3:17 a.m.
- To Pittsburgh/Bay Point at 3:26 a.m.
- To Millbrae at 3:31 a.m.
- To SFO at 4:01 a.m.
- Last trains from Montgomery:
- To Dublin/Pleasanton at 3:15 a.m.
- To Pittsburgh/Baypoint at 3:24 a.m.
- To Millbrae at 3:32 a.m.
- To SFO at 4:03 a.m.

Caltrain will operate on a weekday schedule and add extra trains. Southbound trains leave at 7:30 p.m., 8:40 p.m., 9:40 p.m., 10:40p.m., midnight, 12:45 a.m., 1:15 a.m. and 2:15 a.m. Caltrain will be free after 11 p.m. For further information, visit the Caltrain 2009 Holiday Schedule page.
- AC Transit provides regular overnight service on Route 800 from selected stops on Market Street.

Re-routes in the various neighborhoods will take place only if necessary:
- Embarcadero area:
- 1 CALIFORNIA would not serve stops east of Davis.
- Californa Cable Car would not serve stops east of Kearny.
- North Beach. If Broadway & Columbus closes :
- 12 FOLSOM/PACIFIC toward Cesar Chavez would run via Clay between Powell and Battery.
- 8X BAYSHORE EXPRESS and 91 OWL would not serve stops between Kearny & Jackson through Columbus & Stockton.
- Cow Hollow (Union Street):
- 45 UNION-STOCKTON would not serve stops on Union west of Van Ness.
- The Castro:
- 24 DIVISADERO would not serve the stop at Castro & Market.
- 35 EUREKA would stop on Market between Douglass and Eureka, and would miss all stops on Castro. Board on Eureka.
