Regular fares

Applies to buses, Metro, and historic streetcars. Applies to service to and from AT&T Park. Does not apply to cable car fares, or to Candlestick Park expresses and other Special Events service fares.

Note: Exact change required. No change given. No refunds provided for overpayment.

Turnstile faregates only accept electronic fare media (cash value or Muni pass on a Clipper® or RTC ID card, or a limited use Muni Ticket.)

The above fares are good for 90 minutes with a transfer. Always ask for a transfer on all Muni lines except cable cars, even if you do not plan to transfer to another vehicle. Transfers are issued on request at the time the fare is paid.

If you pay a fare with cash value loaded on your Clipper card, your transfer is automatically applied to your card. You do not need a paper transfer.

In Muni Metro subway stations, where you enter by a faregate, the transfer/fare receipt is automatically dispensed from a slot at the far side of the faregate once you have paid your fare. You need to take that transfer before you leave the faregate area.

If you pay a fare with cash value loaded on your Clipper card, your transfer is automatically applied to your card. You do not need a paper transfer.

J, K, L, M, N, S, and T customers must have a transfer/fare receipt or other Proof of Payment.

Cable car fares

  • No transfers/fare receipts are accepted.
  • Fare receipts are issued; one-ride-only receipts are not valid as transfers.
  • Adult and youth, ages 5 to 17: $6 each ride, a single ride on a single cable car vehicle.
  • Senior, ages 65 or older; disabled; Medicare card holder:
    • 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.: $6 each ride.
    • Before 7 a.m. or after 9 p.m.:
      • $3 each ride, cash or ticket only. Valid ID required.
      • $6 each ride, no discount, with e-cash on Senior Clipper card or RTC ID card.
  • An All-Day Passport is sold for $14 by the conductors on the cable cars. This passport is equivalent to a 1-Day Passport only on the day sold. You may want to purchase this if you will be riding more than one cable car vehicle, e.g., transferring between a Powell line and the California Line, as well as riding other Muni vehicles.
  • Clipper cards containing Muni monthly passes or cash value are accepted. Show card to Cable Car conductor.

Through Dec. 31, 2012

Effective Jan. 1, 2013

A valid single-ride cable car ticket with a face value of less than the current cable car fare requires an additional cash payment to make up the full current cable car fare.

Interagency passes and Limited use Muni tickets do not count towards cable car fares.

The conductors can make change for up to $20.

Single ride cable car tickets are available at ticket booths located at Powell and Market or Hyde and Beach. They are also available at the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau at 900 Market St. in Hallidie Plaza, at Powell and Market streets.

Candlestick Park and other Special Event Fares

Muni provides express service to Candlestick Park for 49ers home games as well as service to other events at other locations, such as the annual Bay to Breakers foot race. This service requires a Special Event fare.

(Muni also provides shuttles from San Bruno and Bacon and from Third at Gilman to Candlestick Park for 49ers home games, for which basic fares apply.)

Special Event Round-trip Fares:

  • $12 for adults, age 18-64.
  • $10 for seniors, ages 65 or older; disabled persons; Medicare card holders; and youths, ages 5 to 17. Valid ID required.
  • $8 for all persons with a valid Muni pass, Passport, CityPASS or pass equivalent.
  • Children under 5 are free.
  • Cash fares paid on Muni receive an extended-hours.
  • Fares paid with Clipper cards will receive the regular 90-minute transfer after each special-event trip tag.

How to Pay Your Special Event Fare

  • Pay the fare either in cash at the farebox or in cash value from a Clipper card.
  • If your Muni pass is on a Clipper card, you must also have $8 in cash value loaded to your card to pay that fare; you cannot pay that $8 in cash at the farebox.
  • If you do not have $8 in cash loaded onto your Clipper card along with your pass, you must pay either $12 (Adult) or $10 (Senior, Youth, Disabled) in cash at the farebox; you will not receive the $8 fare.

Customers with Clipper cards may load cash value at either Muni or BART ticket vending machines or through any Clipper distributor in advance of boarding the Express bus.

Special Event Fare Conditions

  • If paying with cash, exact change is required.
  • Transfer/fare receipts, tickets, or tokens from regular Muni service are not valid for special event fares.
  • The transfer/fare receipt issued on board special event service is good for return service after the event, and must be presented to Muni personnel at that time.
  • The transfer/fare receipt issued on board special event service is good for transferring to other Muni lines after the event, except cable cars.
  • If you pay with cash value on a Clipper® card, a 90-minute transfer is automatically applied to your card.
