Muni Transfers/Fare Receipts

Transfers/fare receipts are issued when a cash or token coupon fare is paid. They are not needed with passes, Passports, or monthly disabled stickers, and thus are not issued when fares are paid by these means.

Always ask for a transfer on all Muni lines except Cable Cars, even if you do not plan to transfer to another vehicle. Valid transfers/fare receipts are considered Proof of Payment on Metro lines.

Transfers/fare receipts are valid for travel on any Muni vehicles (except Cable Cars) for at least 90 minutes but for no more than two hours, from the time of issue. Keep your transfer for your entire ride, and for any subsequent rides during the valid period.

Transfers/fare receipts are valid on Muni for a stopover and/or round trip, as long as travel is completed during the period for which the transfer/fare receipt is valid.

Transfers/fare receipts issued by drivers after 8:30 pm are marked Late Night and are valid until 5:00 am. Subway gates and ticket machines issue transfers/fare receipts valid for 90 minutes at all times.

Transfer/fare receipts are not valid on Cable Cars or for special service.

In Muni Metro subway stations, where you enter by a faregate, the transfer/fare receipt is automatically dispensed from a slot at the far side of the faregate once you have paid your fare. You need to take that transfer before you leave the faregate area.

BART

Embarcadero through Balboa Park stations

Before you exit the BART paid area, the part of the station within the fare gates, go to the Muni coupon machine near the addfare machines. Press the button, and out comes a two-part coupon for 25¢ off Muni adult fares from and to BART.

BART-to-Muni portion

Within 1 hour after the coupon is issued, give this portion to the Muni driver (on the surface) or station agent (in the subway) and pay a $1.75 fare instead of the standard $2.00 upon boarding the Muni vehicle or at the subway faregate. You will receive a standard Muni transfer/fare receipt, which you must keep. Ask for the Muni-to-BART portion back for your return trip.

BART Plus

Note: A "BART/Plus" pass (offsite link), is good for half-month periods, gives you unlimited rides on Muni, including cable cars, and selected other Bay Area transit agencies. It also contains a predetermined amount of BART fare. For more information, contact BART (offsite link) at 415.969.2278.

Other bay Area transit agencies

Some agencies offer passes or tickets that allow regular customers to transfer to Muni. They cost less than purchasing a pass for each agency individually and are the equivalent of a Muni Adult Fast Pass on Muni buses and streetcars in San Francisco. These passes are not good on cable cars or BART. These passes are good on Muni for the first three days of the month following their expiration date.

Contact the agency to find out if a Muni pass is available, how much it costs, and where to buy it. Call 511, the new toll-free service for all Bay Area transportation systems and follow the touch-tone menu to reach the agency you're interested in.

Transfers from ferries

The three ferry services below sell tickets with a stub that allows you to transfer to Muni in San Francisco and also ride Muni back to the Ferry Building for your return trip. Each Muni stub must be validated with a time stamp on board the ferry. The "Ferry to Muni" stub is good for 2 hours from time of validation for Muni service, and the "Muni to Ferry" stub is good anytime on the day of validation for a return trip. Each part of the ticket MUST be exchanged for a transfer/fare receipt by a Muni operator or station agent upon use. These transfers are not valid for cable car service.

In Muni Metro subway stations, where you enter by a faregate, the transfer/fare receipt is automatically dispensed from a slot at the far side of the faregate once you have paid your fare. You need to take that transfer before you leave the faregate area.
