About TransLink on Muni

The TransLink system is a new, convenient way to pay for transit rides in the Bay Area.

Currently, Muni is still in the process of installing and testing the entire system in Muni Metro stations and on all Muni buses, trains and streetcars. Since it may not be fully functional at all times, it is not yet available for public use. Until further notice, TransLink is not available on cable cars.

If you use TransLink on Muni, please note that you do so with the understanding that not all vehicles are equipped to accept TransLink, and even those that are may not have working readers at all times.

  • If you use the system and your TransLink card fails to work properly you will be required to have alternate fare payment such as cash, token, pass or a transfer
  • If you transfer from AC Transit, Golden Gate Transit and Ferry or another Muni vehicle, it would be best to pay a cash fare, and receive a paper transfer, until the system is fully functional
