There are two concurrent projects affecting cable car service. Please also see the California Street Cable Car Infrastructure Improvement Project page.

Updates

The Cable Car System Improvement Project has been completed. Regular Cable Car Service on the Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde lines resumed on June 6.

Transit alert for Powell-Hyde Cable Car Line, June 1 to 5

The third and final shutdown is scheduled as follows:

Effective Wednesday, June 1 to Sunday, June 5
Complete Shutdown of the SFMTA Cable Car System
Muni Bus Shuttles to Substitute for All Cable Car Line

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) reminds customers, merchants and neighbors that work continues on the two Powell cable car lines and California Cable Car Line. Upon completion of the third and final shutdown as part of the Cable Car System Improvement Project the City’s beloved cable car system will feature new technology and improved quality, reliability, maintenance and safety.

This third shutdown, the entire Cable Car system shutdown, will take place Wednesday, June 1 through Sunday, June 5.

Muni bus shuttles will operate in lieu of cable cars for the entire length of the Powell-Hyde, Powell-Mason and California Cable Car lines.  Customers can get on and off the bus shuttle at all regular stops except those in or around the construction areas as posted.

What to expect:

    • Temporary removal of a limited number of parking spaces along the shuttle bus routes
    • Shuttle buses between Ellis & Powell, Francisco & Taylor and Beach & Hyde streets during all hours of service
    • The Regular Muni Fare of $2 ($.75 Youth/Seniors/Disabled) will apply. Transfers will be provided
    • A safer and more reliable cable car system

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which operates Muni, held community meetings about the Cable Car construction this spring on the Powell-Mason, Powell-Hyde and California lines.

SFMTA Introduces Spring Cable Car System Improvement Project
Shutdowns and Substitute Muni Bus Shuttles

As part of the continuing rehabilitation and maintenance of San Francisco’s iconic cable cars, the two Powell lines, Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde, will be shut down this spring during three, non-consecutive weeks for five days each.  The California Line, which was shut down in January for major rehabilitation and associated street improvements, will reopen in June when construction is completed. Please see chart below for dates.

The Cable Car System Improvement Project will provide a critical system upgrade as part of the SFMTA’s ongoing Capital Reinvestment Program. The current system has been in continuous service for almost 27 years and needs to be refurbished. This project is a significant investment in renewing your system to ensure that it is safer, more reliable and easier to maintain.

Three separate shutdowns of five days each are planned:

Shutdown

Cable Car Line Affected

Scheduled Dates

Shutdown 1

Powell-Mason Line

3/28-4/1/11

Shutdown 2

Powell-Hyde Line from Jackson and Powell to the end of the line on Beach and Hyde

4/25 – 4/29/11

Shutdown 3

California, Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde lines

6/1-6/5/11

Please note that the construction schedule may change due to weather or unexpected conditions.

NOTE:

  • During the three periods of service shutdowns, cable car service will be impacted. Muni bus shuttles will substitute for cable car service. Customers can get on and off the shuttle bus at all regular stops except at stops in the construction sites.
  • Local access will be provided most of the time; however, access may be delayed by construction work or equipment in the construction zones. Police officers will be on site directing traffic.
  • Some street parking will be temporarily unavailable in or near the construction sites.
