Service alert for California Cable Car
Update
Your California Street Cable Car Back on Track
Service Reopens on June 21, 2011
Dear Neighbor:
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which operates Muni, is pleased to announce that the California Street Cable Car Line will reopen for service on June 21.
Through its Capital Investment Program, the SFMTA, in conjunction with San Francisco Department of Public Works, started Phase One of the California Street Cable Car Infrastructure Project in September of 2010. During Phase One we constructed curb ramps to comply with Americans with Disability Act (ADA) requirements, repaired sidewalk curbs and replaced existing sewers at various locations along California Street.
Work in Phase Two started in January and included replacing the aging electronic and mechanical components underneath the cable car trackway as well as important street improvements on California Street between Van Ness and Drumm streets.
We know that there were inconveniences to you and your neighbors during construction, but hope that you will enjoy the benefits of a transportation network that is in a state of good repair. We thank you for your understanding and patience as we worked in your neighbor-hood to make your Muni system safer and more reliable.

Construction schedule may change due to weather or unexpected conditions.
KEY ELEMENTS:
- Phase Two of the California Street Cable Car Infrastructure Improvement Project will require a closure of the California Cable Car Line from January 3 until June 2011.
- During the closure of the California Cable Car Line, Muni bus shuttles will provide substitute service daily from 6:30 a.m. until 12:30 a.m.
- Major construction, mostly confined within the Muni cable car trackway, will proceed at three different locations along California Street between Van Ness Avenue and Drumm Street. We will try to keep construction sites at least two blocks apart in order to minimize inconvenience.
- San Francisco’s signature cable cars will still be available to local residents and visitors on the Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde lines. However, these two cable car lines will undergo safety improvements during a shutdown of approximately four days for each line in March and April and shutdown of both lines in June 2011.
- The trolley coach operations on the 1 California bus route will remain in service.
- Construction is scheduled for Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., although night and Sunday work may be necessary.
- During construction, at least one traffic lane will remain open for traffic in each direction at all times. Traffic controls will be in place; however, expect slow traffic at intersections.
- Noise and dust will be kept to a minimum.
- Street parking will be prohibited in and around construction zones. Please read and adhere to No-Parking signage.
- Local businesses are open for business during construction.
BACKGROUND:
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) and the Department of Public Works (DPW) began Phase One of the California Cable Car Infrastructure Improvement Project in September 2010. Completed work includes sidewalk curb repairs, sewer replacement and curb ramp installation along 17 blocks of California Street between Van Ness Avenue and Drumm Street.
Phase Two of the project will replace aging electronic and mechanical components underneath the cable car trackway to ensure the continued safe operation of the cable car system. Work will also include reconstruction of concrete streets between Mason Street and Kearny Street and street repaving along California Street. During the months of the cable car shutdown, bus shuttles will stop at regular California Cable Car stops, although temporary relocation of bus stops may occur to accommodate construction.
The SFMTA, DPW and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) are collaborating on the California Street Infrastructure Improvement Project. The City completed the last major overhaul of the cable car system on California Street in 1984. As a result, much of the system’s infrastructure, including key electrical and mechanical components, is worn and in need of rehabilitation. DPW last repaved California Street 25 years ago.
Thank you for your continued support and patience as we renew your Muni system.
