Q: What is a pilot program?

A: A pilot program is a temporary trial program designed to test the feasibility, functionality, popularity and potential costs of a new service or product. If the pilot program is successful, the project may be implemented on a permanent basis.

Q: Is this pilot program free?

A: No. Customers participating in the Senior/Disabled Pilot Pass Program will be required to purchase their monthly passes at specific SFMTA retail locations (see below) for five dollars more than the current Muni Senior Pass or Disabled Sticker. Please remember: neither the Senior Pass nor the Disabled Sticker currently offers BART use within San Francisco.

Q: I am a current senior/disabled Muni customer. Am I automatically eligible?

A: No. To be eligible to participate in the Senior/Disabled Pilot Program you must first register for a random lottery. Customers can register online for the lottery or by calling the San Francisco 311 Customer Service Center.  Disabled customers must show proof of their disability in the form of a Regional Transit Connection (RTC) Discount ID Card when purchasing the pass.  Seniors will be required to present either the RTC ID card or another government issued ID to verify age. Acceptable forms of identification for age verification include Medicare card, driver’s license or CA ID, valid photo ID or Government issued passport.

Q: I currently have a senior pass. What are the advantages to having the new combined Senior/Disabled Pilot Pass?

A: The current Muni Senior Pass and Disabled Sticker only allow customers to ride Muni within the City and County of San Francisco. The new combined Senior/Disabled Pilot Pass will also allow Muni customers to ride BART within the City and County of San Francisco.

Q: Can I use my Senior/Disabled Pilot Pass for BART trips outside of the City?

A: No. Senior/Disabled Pilot Passes are good only for BART trips within the City and County of San Francisco.

Q: If I’m accepted for this Pilot Program, can I buy my passes online?

A: No. For the duration of this pilot program, the Senior/Disabled Pilot Pass must be purchased in person. Participants receive a ticket voucher book containing six tear-off vouchers. Each voucher is good for the purchase of a one-month Senior/Disabled Pilot Pass and will only be available for purchase the third week*** of each month and only at the following SFMTA retail locations:

  • SFMTA Customer Service Center—11 South Van Ness Avenue
  • Market and Powell cable car ticket booth

Q: When will I be able to purchase the Senior/Disabled Pilot Pass?

The Senior/Disabled Pilot Pass will only be available for purchase the third week* of each month during the survey periods.

Q: How do I get my monthly Senior/Disabled Pilot Pass?

A: Pilot participants will be selected at random for every six months during the pilot program.  Once selected, each participant will receive a ticket voucher book containing vouchers for each of the six months.  To purchase the Senior/Disabled Pilot Pass, participants must come in person and bring:

  1. A valid RTC Card (for persons with disabilities) or the RTC card or other valid government issued identification verifying age (65 or older) for seniors
  2. The tear-off voucher for the current month
  3. The $20 monthly pass fee to one of the following SFMTA retail locations:
    • SFMTA Customer Service Center—11 South Van Ness Avenue

Q: How long will I be able to use my Senior/Disabled Pilot Pass?

A: The 18-month Senior/Disabled Pilot Program will be comprised of three test groups. Each group will receive vouchers good for six months. These vouchers must be presented in person when purchasing your monthly pass at one of the locations indicated above. Each monthly pass is good only for the calendar month displayed on the pass.
