Carl Street Track Replacement Project Update
Overhead Wire Replacement Nears Completion
Installation of Traffic Signal at Carl and Stanyan and
Installation of Rail Lubricators at Carl & Cole and at Carl & Arguello to begin in June 2013*

Dear Neighbor/Merchant/Muni Customer:

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees transportation in the city, including the Municipal Railway (Muni), is finishing up scheduled overhead wire replacement work on Carl Street between Cole and Arguello streets. At some locations, crews will continue to backfill the concrete foundations around the new poles on the sidewalk. The work, including pole and overhead wire replacements and sidewalk repairs, is expected to be completed by the end of May.

Sometime in June, the installation of a new traffic signal will begin at the intersection of Carl and Stanyan streets. While under construction, there will be times when the existing signal will not work.  During these times, traffic control officers will be on site to direct traffic. Also in June, the contractor will install rail lubricators on Carl Street, one at Cole Street and the other at Arguello Street.

Installation of the traffic signal and the rail lubricators is scheduled between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weekend work may be necessary. The overall construction on Carl Street is expected to be finished in late June.

Construction Impacts:

  • Some street parking will not be available where work is taking place.
  • The work will require temporary lane closures around working area.
  • All streets will remain open during the construction.
  • Local access will be granted and all local businesses will remain open.

The Carl Street Track Replacement Project will provide the following benefits:

  • New track for a smoother, faster ride on Muni
  • Bulbouts to enhance safety and boarding at N Judah Line stops
  • Curb and ramp upgrades
  • Water and sewer improvements
  • Street light pole replacement

* This schedule is subject to weather or other unforeseen conditions.
