COUNTDOWN to SHUTDOWN

As part of the Church and Duboce Track and Street Improvement Project and the Carl Street Rail Replacement Project, there will be a multiple-day shutdown that is slated to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 25, and end at 5 a.m. on Monday, June 4. This “long shutdown” includes a shutdown of the N Judah Line, a partial shutdown of the J Church and reroutes on the 22 Fillmore and N-Owl routes.

Details

This is the culmination of a project which also includes a shutdown the weekend of May 11 to 14. Details on that shutdown is available on the Church and Duboce Track and Street Improvement Project page and the Carl Street Rail Replacement Project page.

Here is an update on the continuing construction which will provide:

  • New track for a smoother, faster ride on Muni
  • Bulbouts to enhance safety and boarding at N Judah Line stops
  • Curb and ramp upgrades
  • Water and sewer improvements
  • Pole replacement

COUNTDOWN to SHUTDOWN: The long shutdown begins daily from 7 p.m. on Friday, May 25 through 5 a.m. on Monday, June 4:

  • The N Judah Rail Line will be shut down
    • Substitute bus service provided; will vary weekdays and weekends
  • Nx service unchanged
  • J Church Line to operate between Balboa Park and Market/Church streets
  • Major reroute of the 22 Fillmore
  • Some traffic and bike lanes closed
  • Detours and parking restrictions in effect

Allow extra travel time and plan ahead! Please consider walking or biking.

The construction dates have been coordinated between both the Church & Duboce and Carl Street projects to minimize inconvenience to residents, businesses, Muni customers, motorists and bicyclists.

Muni Service*

Changes to the N Judah Rail Line:

  • The N Judah Rail Line will be completely shut down
    • Substitute bus service provided; will vary weekdays and weekends
  • Nx service will remain unchanged during the construction

Changes to the J Church Line:

  • Rail service on the J Church Line will only operate between Balboa Park BART and Church/Market streets
  • J Church customers can transfer at Church/Market streets between regular J service on the street and Metro subway service provided by the K,L,M and T lines between Church Station and Embarcadero Station

Changes to the 22 Fillmore Line:

  • The 22 Fillmore trolley line will be rerouted and will detour around Church and Duboce streets
  • There will be a motor coach bus bridge for a portion of the route:
    • Tuesday through Friday, from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m., there major trolley detour between Fillmore and McAllister to 16th and Mission streets. Most missed stops are served by a shuttle bus. Missed stops are on Church between Hermann and Market streets.
    • For Muni Metro, remain on 22 trolley detour and transfer at Castro Station.

N Owl Reroute:

  • The N-Owl (including weekend/holiday early mornings) will run between Ocean Beach – Caltrain (4th & King) with a detour on Frederick Street instead of Carl Street and a detour around Church and Duboce streets

Major Bicycle Reroutes

  • The bike routes affected include the Wiggle, the Steiner/Sanchez route, and the connector route from the Wiggle to Market Street from Duboce Avenue.
  • Please follow bike detour signs posted.
  • WE ENCOURAGE CYCLISTS TO USE MARKET STREET, 14TH STREET and SANCHEZ AS AN ALTERNATE BIKE ROUTE.

What to Expect During Construction:

  • Construction crews and equipment will be on site working around the clock during construction
  • Traffic control officers along with police officers will direct traffic at critical intersections
  • Noise and dust will be controlled in adherence with City Codes
  • Electronic messaging boards will be used in affected areas to alert motorists and cyclists of detours
  • Access to local businesses, residences and  driveways will  be maintained

Residents, merchants and Muni customers can also expect street and bike lane closures and detours during the construction.
