L Taraval Line Partial Shutdown and Bus Substitution

From West Portal to Zoo

Due to Track Switch Work

Friday, July 13 – Monday, July 16*

Dear Neighbor/Business Merchant/Muni Customer:

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which manages transportation in the city, including the Municipal Railway (Muni), continues to improve Muni service and system reliability by replacing aging track and systems throughout the city. This Switch Replacement Project is part of regular rail maintenance by Muni’s Maintenance of Way personnel and consists of upgrades of the existing track along the N Judah, L Taraval and J Church lines for a smoother, quieter ride.

The L Taraval Metro Line will be partially shut down 8 p.m. Friday, July 13 through start of service Monday, July 16. Buses will substitute from West Portal to the Zoo for the entire weekend.

What to expect during construction:

  • Construction will take place on Taraval Street between 22nd and 23rd avenues as well as at Taraval Street and 35th Avenue.
  • Traffic will be diverted from the two center lanes of the street at each location for a distance of approximately 200 feet through Monday afternoon.
  • Preparation work will take place the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday preceding the shutdown, including staging equipment, material and removal of plates from the track way.
  • Beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, shutdown work will begin at both locations, and will go until approximately 10 p.m. This work involves significant noise levels, as the crews will begin to saw cut the rail and prepare for the removal of the existing switches. There will be noise from generators, chipping guns, heavy equipment, gas powered saws and other tools.
  • Heavy work and noise on Saturday night will end at 9 p.m.
  • Train Testing is scheduled for 9 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Approximately 10 parking spaces at each location will be temporarily removed. Crews will try to disperse the parking restriction locations away from businesses and other heavy use locations as much as possible.
