Updated November 13, 2006
for September 1, 2005, fare increase.

Fares

This page contains fare info effective September 1, 2005.

Regular fares

These regular fares are effective September 1, 2005.

Applies to buses, Metro, and historic streetcars. Applies to service to and from SBC Park. Does not apply to cable car fares, or to Candlestick Park and Special Events service fares.

Note: Exact change required. No change given. Subway turnstiles require coins (all denominations of US coins accepted, including dollar coins).

J, K, L, M and N riders MUST have a transfer/fare receipt or other Proof of Payment.

Always ask for a transfer on all Muni lines except cable cars, even if you do not plan to transfer to another vehicle. Transfers are issued on request at the time the fare is paid.

Cable car fares

These cable car fares are effective September 1, 2005.

  • No transfers/fare receipts accepted or issued
  • Adult & Youth (ages 5-17): $5.00 each way (single ride on a single cable car)
  • Senior (ages 65+) & Disabled:

Monthly passes, BART Plus, and Passports are valid on cable cars. Weekly passes require a payment of $1. Tokens require an additional payment of $3.50 (no savings). Interagency passes do not count towards cable car fares.

Through March 31, 2006:

Cable car tickets and one-day Cable Car Pass ($10) are sold by the conductors on the cable cars. If you are planning to transfer between Cable Cars, make an intermediate stop, or ride round-trip, the one-day Cable Car pass will be a good choice compared to a single ride fare. However, a Passport (this page) may be a better deal than a one-day Cable Car Pass if you are also planning to ride other Muni vehicles.

Effective April 1, 2006:

Cable car tickets and an All-Day Passport ($11) are sold by the conductors on the cable cars. These passports are equivalent to a Passport (this page) only on the day sold.

The following applies both before and after April 1, 2006:

The conductors can make change for up to $20.

Limited edition souvenir cable car tickets are available at ticket booths located at Powell and Market Streets and at Hyde and Beach Streets. They're also available at Muni's Revenue window at 949 Presidio Ave., Room 103 and at the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau at 900 Market St. (Hallidie Plaza, at Powell and Market Streets) and online through the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau. $2.00 tickets require an additional cash payment of $3.00, and $3.00 tickets require an additional cash payment of $2.00.

More information about the Cable Car Souvenir Cards is available.

Candlestick Park and other Special Event Fares

These special event fares are effective September 1, 2005.

Muni provides express service to Candlestick Park for 49ers home games as well as special service to other events at other locations, such as the annual Bay to Breakers foot race. This special service requires a premium fare.

(Muni also provides a shuttle from San Bruno and Bacon to Candlestick Park for 49ers home games, for which basic fares apply.)

Special service fares:

$7 for adults, age 18-64.
$5 for seniors, ages 65+; disabled persons (valid ID required); and youths, ages 5-17.
$3 for all persons with a valid Muni pass, Passport or pass equivalent.
Children under 5 are free.

Special Fare Conditions:

  • Round-trip fares only. There are no one-way fares.
  • Exact change is required.
  • Transfer/fare receipts, tickets, or tokens are not valid for special event fares.
  • The round-trip transfer/fare receipt issued on board special event service is good for return service after the event, and must be presented to Muni personnel at that time.
  • The round-trip transfer/fare receipt issued on board special event service is good for transferring to other Muni lines after the event, except cable cars.

Seniors, ages 65+, youths, ages 5-17, and children under age 5 may be asked for proof of age. Acceptable documents are a birth certificate, driver's license, or State of California Identification Card. The document must show the person's date of birth. See the information about discounts for seniors and persons with disabilities.

For more information on Muni's service to Candlestick Park or other special events service, please call Muni's Telephone Information Center at 415-673-6864.

For transit service to the ballpark from other locations in the Bay Area, call 511, the toll-free service for all Bay Area transportation systems and follow the menu to reach the agency you're interested in. Bay Area transit information can also be found on the 511 Transit Web site.

Note: Using any Muni Pass on Special Services requires an additional payment of $3.

When to buy passes and stickers

Monthly passes and disabled stickers are sold at the various locations beginning five business days before the month and continuing for the first few days of the month for which the passes are sold, unless otherwise noted.

Passes and disabled stickers for the current month are sold all month long at Muni's Revenue Department, 949 Presidio Avenue, Room 103 at Geary Blvd.; at the cable car ticket booths at Powell & Market and Hyde & Beach; and at City Hall, Van Ness Avenue & McAllister Street Muni Maps are also sold at those locations.

Monthly passes may also be purchased online at any time. However, after the first few business days of the month, you will be purchasing a pass for the following month.

Purchasing with a credit card or Commuter Checks

Passes, disabled stickers, tokens, and Muni Maps may be purchased with a Visa/Mastercard credit card at Muni's Revenue Department, 949 Presidio Avenue, Room 103. Credit cards must be used to make an online purchase.

Payment for passes and disabled stickers may be made by Commuter Checks where indicated in the vendor list. Commuter Checks are an employer-based program.

Muni sells tokens: easier than carrying one-dollar bills or loads of quarters.

The tokens sell in bags of 10 for $15.00, or $1.50 a ride. The tokens have no time expiration, and you can get a free transfer/fare receipt with them. A list of vendors that sell tokens is available.

See Cable Car fares for token use on Cable Cars.

Tokens replaced by temporary Token Coupon Booklets through August 31, 2005

Passports are also sold every day from 8 a.m. to midnight at the information booths in the baggage claim areas at the San Francisco International Airport. Muni Maps are also sold at the information booths.

CityPass

image, link to CityPass (9kb)The San Francisco CityPass is good for seven consecutive days on Muni and is also good for admission to several attractions in the city. It provides a savings over the individual admission prices for the attractions and fare for Muni.

CityPasses are available at those attractions, at the Visitor Information Center at Powell & Market Streets, and at Muni's Revenue Department, 949 Presidio Avenue at Geary.

An alternative to CityPass is a Muni Passport.

Get more information, or purchase a CityPass online (offsite link). There is a shipping and handling charge for online purchases. The CityPass is produced and marketed by CityPass, an independent organization, not by Muni, and Muni does not set the prices.

Note: Using any Muni Pass on Special Services requires an additional payment of $3.

TransLink®

TransLink is a stored-value "smart card" which will be used in the future to let riders pay for rides on most Bay Area transit systems with a single, convenient card. This project is in a pilot phase right now; you will see the TransLink devices appearing on some Muni vehicles and at some Metro stations.

For more information on the TransLink project, visit the TransLink Web site
