Transit Effectiveness Project (TEP) Reaches New Milestone
Dear Friend of Transit:
It is with great pride that I inform you that the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Board of Directors voted unanimously to endorse the recommendations outlined in the Transit Effectiveness Project (TEP). The TEP is the first comprehensive review of Muni service in a generation and will enable Muni to better serve current and potential customers by making service more reliable, convenient and efficient.
The recommendations approved by the SFMTA Board incorporate significant stakeholder feedback received through letters, emails, 311 and comments at public workshops, community briefings and employee round tables.
The package of recommendations could result in changing nearly half of Muni service as we know it today to more effectively meet customer needs and market demand. The TEP recommendations are projected to increase the number of daily boardings on Muni by 70,000, or 10 percent, by 2015, in large part by adding capacity and frequency to the busiest rail lines and bus routes. Most notably, the TEP would result in a shorter wait for at least 75 percent of peak period customers and 50 percent of midday customers. It also will make San Francisco greener by eliminating 60,000 miles of auto trips each day.
You can expect service changes as early as July 2009. In the meantime, pilot projects could be launched as early as next year. Moreover, during the transition from planning to implementation, we will continue to improve Muni service through reliability initiatives and travel time improvements.
I want you to know how much I valued your involvement in the TEP planning phase, and I look forward to your continued participation as we evolve into a 21st century system of safe public transportation that is more reliable and more efficient. Please stay tuned for more TEP updates on our website at www.sfmta.com/tep
Sincerely,
Nathaniel P. Ford, Sr.
