A New Look for the Corridor

Bayshore Boulevard Streetscape

The light rail line includes a dramatic "facelift" for Third Street and Bayshore Boulevard. Working with the community members from several neighborhoods, Muni's team of architects and artists explored a variety of themes for the design of the corridor. The result was the idea of a "Great Street / Main Street" as the primary theme for the corridor. In this scheme Third Street takes its place as one of the City's "Great Streets" with a series of design elements that are consistent and recognizable along the corridor. At the same time, Third Street will also serve as a "Main Street" for specific communities along the corridor, with pedestrian-oriented enhancements provided to give special identity to neighborhood centers. Along Third Street in the Bayview Commercial Center, the light rail project provides special "Main Street" pedestrian-oriented improvements, in conjunction with the City's revitalization efforts. These include widened sidewalks with special artist-designed paving patterns, distinct neighborhood trees, seating and pedestrian lighting. The City is seeking funding to provide these improvements in other Main Street areas in the future. Click for a larger sized version of this image (55kb).

This "bird's eye" view of the corridor design shows the unique colored trackway paving that will mark the light rail track area in the middle of the street. It also displays the special corridor-wide street tree (the "Brisbane Box") which will be planted along the corridor, helping to lend a strong "boulevard" image. The Train Approaches

Glass and metal canopies have been provided on all station platforms. These look similar to the canopies on The Embarcadero and were designed with a "zigzag" roofline to reflect the design of many of the striking buildings along the corridor. Seating, lighting and informational signage will be located under each canopy. A tall vertical "marquee" attached to each canopy serves as a distinctive marker for the stations.
