Metro East Light Rail Maintenance and Operations Facility
Objective:
- To construct a new facility for the storage, maintenance, and operation of Muni's new light rail vehicles (Breda cars).
- To support the operation of the new Third Street Light Rail Line.
- To relieve the overcrowded conditions at Muni's only other light rail maintenance facilities at San Jose and Geneva Avenues by having part of the fleet transferred to Metro East.
- To improve the overall Metro delivery service with a new facility capable of dispatching trains from the eastern part of the City.
Need:
This new facility is needed to support the new Third Street Light Rail Line. It is also needed to relieve the overcrowded conditions at Muni's only other light rail maintenance and storage facility at San Jose and Geneva Avenues.
Location:
Located on a parcel bounded by 25th Street, Illinois Street, Cesar Chavez Street and approximately Louisiana Street; total 13 acres; initial storage capacity of yard will be about 80 light rail vehicles.

Description of Facility/Scope of Project:
- A main shop and administration building bordering Illinois Street; total about 180,000 square feet; building approx. 40 feet high; houses maintenance bays, welding shop, battery shop, material storeroom, operator support/dispatch, etc.
- Power substations within main shop building.
- An open, paved storage yard for light rail vehicles on the east half of the site.
- An on-site parking lot in the center, initially accommodating about 170 rubber tire vehicles.
- Reconstruction of 25th Street and sidewalks from 3rd Street to Louisiana Street,primary entrance of Muni light rail vehicles and autos via 25th Street.
- Partially repave Cesar Chavez Street from 3rd Street to Michigan Street
Reviews:
- Completed environmental (EIR/EIS) reviews and received approvals.
- Completed public reviews on the design and received comments/support.
- Completed Design Review (aesthetic) by the Port of SF.
- Completed Phases I, II & III (colors, materials & public art) Art Commission reviews and received approvals.
- Completed Independent Value Engineering and Peer Reviews.
Schedule:
- Start of construction: August 2005.
- Construction duration: 33 months.
Funding:
- Funded by the Proposition K sales tax revenues, administered by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, SFCTA.
- Also funded by the State and the Federal Transportation Administration, FTA.
