CLAYTON AREA TRAFFIC CALMING PROJECT

This project was made possible in part by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority through a grant of Proposition K Local Transportation Sales Tax funds.

Updated 1/27/12

COMMUNITY MEETING #2 HELD

The second Community Meeting for the Clayton Area Traffic Calming Project was held on January 25, 2012. The SFMTA project managers met with residents of the neighborhood again to present proposed traffic calming treatments in the area. Most of the ideas were met with positive reception by the residents. Many questions were answered on the details of the traffic calming devices and suggestions were given on additional locations to look at. Because of the number of residents that requested improvements on Frederick Street (particularly at the Clayton and Ashbury Street intersections), the SFMTA will collect more data on the area and determine the best method for traffic calming at those locations. NEXT STEPS

The SFMTA project managers will recommend the traffic calming treatments mentioned at the community meeting as well as investigate for further improvements, particularly on Frederick Street. The traffic calming recommendations will be compiled into a report which will be presented to the SFMTA Board for approval. The final report for the Clayton Area Traffic Calming Project is scheduled to be completed by mid-2012. Once the final report is adopted, funding can be sought that will be used for final design and construction.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
This Traffic Calming Project was initiated by area residents. This program seeks to reduce negative impacts of motor vehicle traffic while improving safety and access for pedestrians and bicyclists. In the individual neighborhoods, the Program develops traffic calming projects for local streets from resident and stakeholder input and traffic surveys.

The SFMTA maintains an archive of all written complaints and observations received from the neighborhood. The most frequently expressed issues in the area are:

• Speeding
• Visibility problems
• Crosswalk issues

PROJECT AREA
The Traffic Calming Project is a local streets project and will not address some arterial streets in the area. For example, Haight Street and 17th Street are not part of this project. The project will study and plan for Clayton, Downey, and Ashbury Streets between 17th Street and Waller Street, as well as Frederick Street and Waller Street from Clayton Street to Ashbury Street.
