Proposed Changes
Preliminary plans for Diamond Heights Boulevard (from north to south).
Duncan Street to Carnelian Way
This proposal includes adding a bus zone at the intersection of Duncan Street in the easterly direction and reducing a lane in the westerly direction from Carnelian Way to Duncan Street. This combination of measures would create better sightlines for pedestrians crossing from the north side of street.
Near Gold Mine Drive
No changes are proposed to the traffic lanes in the block of the shopping center. However, the SFMTA would like to pursue bus zones at all existing bus stops along Diamond Heights Boulevard. In the block just south of the shopping center, the SFMTA proposes to eliminate one lane in each direction. Southbound, this requires one lane to merge. As motorists approach this intersection heading northbound, the proposed one lane would expand back into two. This last change would reduce back-ups that might otherwise occur when one lane is removed.
Near Diamond Street (N)
In the southbound direction:
In order to reduce back-up from left-turning drivers, the SFMTA proposes a left-turn lane. In order to accommodate traffic turning left onto Diamond Heights Blvd from Diamond Street, the SFMTA proposes a merge lane. With the addition of a merge lane, the turning drivers would be able to negotiate one direction of traffic at a time. Currently motorists must find an opening in traffic coming from both directions on Diamond Heights Boulevard.
Bus zones will be added in both directions.
Near Addison Street
Approaching the STOP sign in both directions, the proposed one lane would widen into two lanes. This additional width will minimize delays for motorists. In the southbound direction, the left lane will be a left-turn only lane. Bus zones will be added in both direction. Just south of the raised median, the SFMTA proposes leaving one through lane in each direction with the addition of a two-way left-turn lane (TWLTL) between them. The TWLTL will allow drivers to move out of traffic before making turns into their driveways along this block.
Near Diamond Street (S)
In order to reduce delays from left-turning drivers heading down Diamond Street or up Berkeley Way, the SFMTA proposes adding left-turn lanes. The addition of left-turn lanes will allow left-turning vehicles to move out of the way of through traffic. Additionally, the SFMTA proposes adding a guideline for drivers turning left onto Diamond Street.
Project Time Line
The planning process is in a fairly advanced stage at this point. SFMTA engineers have met with members of the community in large and small groups to discuss the project. The public comment phase closes on Friday March 20th. In order to comment, please feel free to contact Antonio Piccagli, the program manager for this project.
