What is ITS?
ITS: An Investment in Transportation
A broad range of diverse technologies, known collectively as intelligent transportation systems (ITS), hold the answer to many of our transportation problems. ITS is comprised of a number of technologies, including information processing, communications, control, and electronics. These technologies provide information on traffic flow, weather and travel conditions to transportation managers and travelers. Transportation Management Centers are collection points for all traffic data. Up to the minute information enables transportation managers to take action in response to roadway conditions and inform travelers via roadside signs, radio broadcasts and other resources about congestion, lane closures, or special event detours. Other actions include signal priority for mass transit vehicles and emergency vehicles, which means improved response times. Joining state-of-the-art technology to our transportation system will save lives, save time, and save money.
