Travelers at home and at work will be able to receive more accurate and timely information about current roadway congestion, special events, and incidents on arterials and freeways before choosing a time, mode and route of travel. The following Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components will help us collect data, take action, and relay information to you.

Traffic Cameras
Cameras are used to monitor roadway conditions, verify incidents and confirm changes made from the Transportation Management Center. Vehicle Detection- Detector stations are used to detect the presence of vehicles (transit, bicycles, and cars) waiting for a traffic signal or to count the number of vehicles on a roadway. It enables the signal system to respond to real time traffic demands and provides operators with traffic speed and volume data to enhance decision-making.

Advanced Transportation Controllers
The Department of Parking & Traffic is installing new 2070 Controllers. These signal controllers allow for timing changes based on real-time traffic volumes. Traffic responsive pattern selection and adaptive signal timing will be used to perform the automatic timing adjustments. When a failure occurs, maintenance personnel would be notified immediately.

Variable Message Signs
When a roadway becomes congested, motorists would be advised of alternative routes and guided to the least congested roadways. Variable Message Signs would also be used to guide motorists during special events and to parking facilities with available spaces.
