There are approximately 1200 traffic signals within the City and County of San Francisco. It is a goal of the SFgo Program to upgrade all of the traffic signal controllers and to connect them to the Transportation Management Center where DPT will have the capability to implement enhanced signal operations for all modes of transportation on a city wide basis. In addition, the Program will install traffic cameras, detection stations and variable message signs to better manage and monitor the surface transportation system and to provide traveler information. Future phases will include linking to Muni for improved transit operations, Caltrans for enhanced freeway operations and TravInfo to disseminate real time traveler information.

The total cost to implement the SFgo Program is estimated to be $215 million. To date, DPT has secured $6.8 million for the SFgo Initial Phase Implementation, which is focused in the South of Market Area. An additional $7.7 million has been secured to expand the Initial Phase into the 3rd Street Corridor, Oak and Fell Streets, and the Central Freeway area. A portion of the funding will also go to integrate with the Caltrans/CHP Transportation Management Center in Oakland.

The SFgo Program is also mainstreaming ITS and including advanced traffic signal controllers and communications network links in existing signal upgrade projects. The following is a list of those projects:
