Project Summary

In 2011, Caltrans awarded the Outer Sunset Safe Routes to School Project to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (SFMTA) Sustainable Streets Division to improve safety for children, parents and community members walking and biking to Sunset Elementary School and AP Giannini Middle School. The project seeks to address community concerns for traffic safety which include:

  • Drivers performing abrupt midblock U-turns
  • The long crossing distances for people walking across Ortega Street
  • Drivers failing to yield to pedestrians
  • High traffic speeds

This Safe Routes to School Project proposes the following traffic safety improvements to the area:

  • Curb bulb-outs at the intersection of 37th Avenue and Ortega Street
  • Narrowed lanes along Ortega Street between 37th and 41st Avenues. To narrow the lanes, the plan employs a combination of the following devices:
    • Pedestrian refuge islands on the south side (school side) of the street at the intersections of Ortega Street and 38th, 39th, 40th, 41st Avenues
    • Bicycle lanes in both directions from 20th Avenue to Lower Great Highway
