About the Alamo Elementary School Safe Routes to School Project

Alamo Elementary School

Project Summary

Caltrans awarded the Alamo Elementary School Safe Routes to School Project to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s Transportation Engineering Section in 2008 to help improve several intersections around the school. The project was borne from the Central Richmond Traffic Calming Project that started in 2007. Neighborhood residents convened to discuss traffic safety improvements in the neighborhood and noted that the surrounding streets around the school needed safety improvements. The proposed plan includes:

Callifornia St
New median islands on California Street at 21st and 24th Avenues.

Median islands will help reduce the “wide-open” feel of the street (as seen above) to discourage drivers from driving fast down the street. In addition, the islands will give pedestrians a refuge when crossing the street.

California St bus stop
New sidewalk extensions (bulb-outs) at 22nd Avenue and California Street

Bulb-outs will reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians and make them more visible to drivers when they are crossing California Street. Bulb-outs at bus stops mean passengers will not need to step out into the street to get on or off the bus or to check if the bus is coming (as seen above).

25th Ave/California St
New pedestrian signals on 25th Avenue at California and Lake Streets

The new signals will give pedestrians more information about how much time they have to cross the street.

Project Updates

(Updated June 30, 2010)

We plan to start the detailed design in 2011 after finishing up the environmental review.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 2014.
