This project was made possible in part by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority through a grant of Proposition K Local Transportation Sales Tax funds.
Project Summary
Caltrans awarded the George Peabody Elementary School Safe Routes to School Project to the San Francisco Department of Parking and Traffic in 2002 to help improve several intersection crossings around the school and improve the signage and striping on the streets surrounding the school. Improvements to the school area included:
New pedestrian island at 7th Avenue and California Street
New sidewalk extension (bulb-out) at 6th Avenue and Clement Street
New bus stop sidewalk extension at 6th Avenue and California Street
New sidewalk extension (bulb-out) at 7th Avenue and California Street
New traffic signal at 7th Avenue and Clement Street

Supervisor Jake McGoldrick, school officials and students do the honor in turning on the traffic signal at 7th Avenue and Clement Street during the project completion celebration and ceremony on January 28, 2005.
Overall, these improvements were well received by the school and neighborhood and have helped the walking environment to the school from the surrounding neighborhood. The project was completed in 2005.
