About the Jefferson Elementary School Safe Routes to School Project

Project Summary
Caltrans awarded the Jefferson Elementary School Safe Routes to School Project to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s Parking and Traffic Division in 2006 to help improve several intersections around the school. The project was borne from the 19th-Lincoln Bypass Traffic Calming Project that started in 2005. Neighborhood residents convened to discuss traffic safety improvements in the neighborhood and noted that the surrounding streets around the school needed safety improvements. The proposed plan includes:
New sidewalk extensions (bulb-outs) at 18th Avenue and Irving Street
New sidewalk extensions (bulb-outs) on Judah Street at 17th Avenue
Overall, these improvements should help the walking environment to the school from the surrounding neighborhoods.
