About the West Portal Elementary School Safe Routes to School Project

This project was made possible in part by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority through a grant of Proposition K Local Transportation Sales Tax funds.

West Portal Elementary School

Project Summary

Caltrans awarded the West Portal Elementary School Safe Routes to School Project to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s Transportation Engineering Section in 2009 to help improve several intersection crossings around the school surrounding the school. This project was borne from the West Portal Neighborhood Walking Audit sponsored by the West Portal Neighborhood Association back in 2002. The audit was headed by renowned international walking expert Dan Burden, who has helped create and advocate for better walking conditions in cities around the world.

This project emphasized the crossings on Claremont Boulevard and the Dewey Circle area. The planned improvements for the school area include:

Reconstructing Dewey Circle to modern traffic circle standards

Claremont Blvd/Granville Way
New sidewalk extensions (bulb-outs) on Claremont Boulevard at Granville Way

Claremont Blvd/Allston Way
New traffic chicane on Claremont Boulevard at Allston Way

Project Updates

(Updated June 30, 2010)

We are in the process of obtaining the grant funds from Caltrans which should be done by this year.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 2015.
