About the West Portal Elementary School Safe Routes to School ProjectThis project was made possible in part by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority through a grant of Proposition K Local Transportation Sales Tax funds. Project SummaryCaltrans awarded the West Portal Elementary School Safe Routes to School Project to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s Transportation Engineering Section in 2009 to help improve several intersection crossings around the school surrounding the school. This project was borne from the West Portal Neighborhood Walking Audit sponsored by the West Portal Neighborhood Association back in 2002. The audit was headed by renowned international walking expert Dan Burden, who has helped create and advocate for better walking conditions in cities around the world. This project emphasized the crossings on Claremont Boulevard and the Dewey Circle area. The planned improvements for the school area include:
