San Francisco has around 450,000 registered vehicles, and each one needs a place to park. This increases by about 35,000 vehicles during each workday. SFMTA operates public garages; manages on-street parking through meters, color curbs, and various permits; and sells parking meter cards. SFMTA also enforces parking regulations through the enforcement division. Have a parking ticket? You can pay it online! Avoid having to carry change. Buy a parking meter card! The Parking Authority oversees operations of the nineteen City-owned parking garages and twenty-one metered parking lots. The Parking Authority strives to provide clean, safe and convenient parking at reasonable rates. The Enforcement Division's objectives are to ease traffic congestion and promote parking turnover throughout the City by enforcing regulations and directing traffic. The preferential residential parking system’s main goal is to provide more parking spaces for residents by discouraging long-term parking by people who do not live in the area. There are now 27 residential permit areas in the City. SFpark is the SFMTA’s smart parking management program. It uses best-practice parking management approaches and technology to manage the City’s parking supply to help achieve overall goals for the transportation system.
