About the new meters

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is expanding the number of metered parking spaces to increase parking availability in key commercial districts in San Francisco.

History

A public hearing recommending the addition of 1,550 metered spaces was held in June 2010. After community input, the total number of newly metered spaces was reduced to 1,340, which the SFMTA Board of Directors approved at its meetings on September 7 and October 19.

Attributes of new parking meters

The state of the art new parking meters will:

    • Be installed in areas where parking is either unregulated or with  time limits of one or two hours
    • Have longer time limits (either four hours or no limit) to increase driver convenience
    • Accept credit/debit cards as well as SFMTA parking cards and coins
    • Be single space (on a pole) or multi-space (one pay station per 8-10 vehicles)

How to use the new meters

Meter rates

Just over half of the newly metered spaces are within SFpark pilot areas. SFpark is a federally funded pilot program to test new parking technologies and policies with the aim of reducing the amount of time drivers spend circling for parking. In those pilot areas, the newly metered parking spaces will be priced based on demand with rates generally between $0.25 and $6 per hour depending on demand. Demand will be measured by either in-pavement sensors or a calibration from in-pavement sensors nearby. Prices will change depending on demand but no more often than every four weeks and by no more than $0.50 per hour.

The rates for the remainder of the newly metered spaces are governed by the SFMTA’s Meter Rate Area 3, $2 per hour. These metered spaces will also have extended time limits.
