SFpark Innovations
Core Features
There are three core features that define SFpark:
Real-time Parking Information
SFMTA-owned garages and lots often have spaces available. With SFpark, drivers will have access to real-time garage availability information by text message, on the web, and on a new network of variable message signs in key locations which will be complemented by supplementary wayfinding signs. This information will help drivers find parking more quickly and thus ease congestion. Real-time information about metered on-street parking will be available to drivers real-time via the web.
“Just Right” Prices
Through a new network of wireless smart sensors, SFpark will have the ability to collect, monitor, and analyze parking data. Using this information, SFMTA will adjust prices using the “Goldilocks Principle.” Adjustments will prevent prices that are “too low,” which encourage drivers to double park or circle and wait for an inexpensive spot on a crowded block to open up. These adjustments will also prevent prices that are “too high” causing drivers to look elsewhere. Rather than too high or too low, SFMTA will use “Just Right” pricing.
SFpark will charge the lowest possible price to achieve our target level of availability of at least 10 percent – approximately one available parking space on every block.
SFpark will use “Just Right” pricing to adjust prices at SFMTA-managed parking garages every four to six weeks to encourage drivers to park in garages yet ensuring that SFMTA garages always have space available. Similarly, for metered on-street parking, prices will be adjusted every four to six weeks to help redistribute the demand for parking. Often one block will have no spaces available, but several parking spaces are open only a block or two away. “Just Right” prices will help to redistribute demand for parking by increasing prices (every four to six weeks) on blocks where no spaces are available, and lowering prices where, and when, many spaces are available.
Easy to Pay Meters and Extended Time Limits
SFpark will make parking more convenient. New smart parking meters will make it easy to pay, accepting coins, credit cards, and the SFMTA Smart Card. New longer time limits will make it more convenient to stay and do business. Drivers will have the freedom to enjoy the city without the stress of worrying about parking tickets.
