SFpark logo: Circle less. Live more. How SFpark Began

Several years ago, the SFMTA embarked on the Transit Effectiveness Project (TEP) study to look for ways to improve the performance of Muni. It found that congestion harms Muni’s reliability and speed as system, congestion which is caused in part by drivers double-parking and circling to find parking.

To address these issues, the SFMTA began developing a strategy to make parking easier to find and thereby reduce circling and double parking. Drawing from parking management best practices, the SFMTA developed SFpark. In 2008 the SFMTA was awarded $24.75 million by the Department of Transportation’s Federal Urban Partnership Program (UPP) to pilot test this innovative approach to parking management.

On November 6, 2007, the SFMTA Board approved Resolution 07-169, which authorized the acceptance and expenditure of various funds associated with the UPP, in anticipation of establishing the SFpark program.  On April 15, 2008, the SFMTA Board approved Resolution 08-086, which approved two contracts needed to implement SFpark and the associated pilot projects.  On November 18, 2008 the SFMTA Board unanimously approved Resolution 08-192, which authorized the mechanisms for SFpark

Because the SFMTA manages Muni as well as on-street parking and 40 parking garages and lots, the SFMTA has the unique ability to manage San Francisco’s ground transportation network. Good management of on- and off-street parking can be a powerful tool to help the SFMTA achieve its overall goals.
