Traffic

The Sustainable Streets Division of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is responsible for designing, directing and managing all traffic engineering functions within San Francisco, including placement of signs, signals, traffic striping, and curb markings to promote the safe and efficient movement of people and goods throughout the City. If you have any suggestions, concerns or requests about roadway safety, street parking, or traffic circulation in San Francisco, please contact the Sustainable Streets Division online using the 311 Self Service portal or call the San Francisco 311 Customer Service Center. Please include name and street mailing address for follow-up.

MAINTENANCE OF EXISTING TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES

The Division is also responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of 23,000 parking meters, nearly 200,000 traffic signs, more than 1100 traffic signals, over 880 miles of lane lines, pavement messages, and special curb zones.

If you see any street maintenance issue and do not have access to a computer, you can always call the San Francisco 311 Customer Service Center to report the problem 24 hours a day.

A database is available containing historical Traffic Count Data for select street segments.

 

TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The SFMTA is looking for licensed engineering professionals with experience in the transportation field. SFMTA transportation engineers can apply their skills on a wide ranging set of urban challenges, including traffic management and operations; bicycle and pedestrian safety; and signal design and technology. In order to receive announcements about engineering positions that become available, candidates with a California Civil or Traffic Engineer license must first place themselves on eligible lists through the San Francisco Department of Human Resources. Depending on the years of transportation engineering experience candidates can apply for 5207 Associate Transportation Engineer, 5241 Transportation Engineer or 5211 Senior Engineer. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and receive a passing evaluation of licensure and experience will have their names placed on one-year eligible lists.

Those interested in starting level engineering positions should place themselves in the 5201 Junior Engineer list.
